{"id":10025,"date":"2011-04-12T21:05:16","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T03:05:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=10025"},"modified":"2011-04-12T21:10:42","modified_gmt":"2011-04-13T03:10:42","slug":"bee-diary-april-12-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=10025","title":{"rendered":"Bee Diary:  April 12, 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spring\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Waxing Bee Hiving Moon<\/p>\n<p>Hobby Bee Keepers tonight.\u00a0 Kate and I heard a presentation on Minnesota Grown, a very interesting initiative by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture that supports local food <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10028\" title=\"400_garden_0084\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/400_garden_0084-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"400_garden_0084\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/400_garden_0084-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/400_garden_0084.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/>based businesses with marketing assistance.\u00a0 A woman gave a presentation on cooking with honey.\u00a0 How to make truffles.\u00a0 Uh-oh.\u00a0 They were really good.\u00a0 Not a healthful food, but my were they tasty.<\/p>\n<p>The hobby beekeepers have a farmer look, a rural feel, even though there are many urban and suburban beekeepers.\u00a0 Guys with hat line tans, checked shirts and blue jeans; woman with sensible cloths and no make up.\u00a0 Tonight I learned what to do with all the honey I have left over from the demise of my two colonies; use it four frames at a time to feed my new package bees.<\/p>\n<p>The night was clear and warmish.\u00a0 Today was busy, as was yesterday and as tomorrow and Thursday will be.\u00a0 My energy is up and I&#8217;m having fun.\u00a0 I&#8217;m glad we&#8217;ve had the warm weather and a chance to get into the garden.<\/p>\n<p>About that land my sister, brother and I own in West Texas.\u00a0 Probably not gonna be used for a housing development.\u00a0 Forty acres of mesquite and sand, plus, natives assured me, quite a few rattlesnakes.\u00a0 Taste like chicken I&#8217;m told.\u00a0 A certain, lonely hermit part of me finds West Texas desirable because of its emptiness, its vast spaces and little civilization.\u00a0 I loved Marfa and could imagine a winter retreat down there in Imperial that could serve as a base for outings to Great Bend, Marfa, Guadaleupe Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns.\u00a0 Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Think I&#8217;ll send Mark down there to scout it out, maybe hire a surveyor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaumontenterprise.com\/default\/article\/West-Texas-becomes-ever-more-lonely-as-population-1333504.php\">West Texas<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 2010 Census confirmed what anyone passing through the scrublands  of West Texas already knew: People are leaving, and no one is taking  their place, even with oil at more than $100 a barrel. The people who  remain often drive an hour or more to visit a doctor, buy a pair of  jeans or see a\u00a0movie.<\/p>\n<p>So you might wonder why anyone is still  there, in this place where natural beauty is defined by dry creek beds  and scraggly mesquite, where public transit is a school bus and  Starbucks is a punch\u00a0line.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The greatest sunsets. The stars are just right there.
