{"id":10539,"date":"2011-05-31T15:32:13","date_gmt":"2011-05-31T21:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=10539"},"modified":"2011-05-31T15:32:13","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T21:32:13","slug":"blue-collar-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=10539","title":{"rendered":"Blue Collar Plants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beltane\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waning Last Frost Moon<\/p>\n<p>The last day of May.\u00a0 Where do the good times roll?<\/p>\n<p>This morning Mark and I worked on digging holes in a front bed (Mark) and digging, weeding and dividing hemerocallis, then transplanting them (me) into the holes dug in the front <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10540\" title=\"hemerocallis_just_so\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hemerocallis_just_so-300x275.jpg\" alt=\"hemerocallis_just_so\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hemerocallis_just_so-300x275.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/hemerocallis_just_so.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>bed.\u00a0 Hemerocallis (day lilies) are the blue collar workers of the perennial beds.\u00a0 They work hard, are hardy and bloom like crazy in August.\u00a0 They also have grow out, expanding their territories.\u00a0 And they never die.\u00a0 Hemerocallis are forever.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve gone through several different attitudes toward them.\u00a0 At first I loved their variety and bought several different kinds, putting them in places where I wanted foliage most of the season and blooms during the particular periods when the variety bloomed.\u00a0 That was good.\u00a0 Then, they began to spread out, multiply, take up space, crowd out other plants.\u00a0 That was bad.\u00a0 So, I began to divide and transplant them, much as I did this morning, but with less thought.\u00a0 Eventually this meant that I had not solved the problem, but spread it to different areas of the garden.\u00a0 Duh.\u00a0 So.\u00a0 I stopped buying hemerocallis.\u00a0 That was good.\u00a0 I have given away dozens of clumps of various varieties and yet I have still more.\u00a0 You can see\u00a0 how a nursery person could learn to love hemerocallis.<\/p>\n<p>Now I have what I like to think is a mature attitude toward these sturdy plants.\u00a0 When I need to crowd out weeds and have a bed that will no longer require attention, I reach into my ample supply of hemerocallis and dig, divide, transplant.\u00a0 We now have a good working relationship because we understand each other.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beltane\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waning Last Frost Moon The last day of May.\u00a0 Where do the good times roll?
