{"id":10571,"date":"2011-06-04T12:45:27","date_gmt":"2011-06-04T18:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=10571"},"modified":"2011-06-04T12:45:27","modified_gmt":"2011-06-04T18:45:27","slug":"bees-and-dogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=10571","title":{"rendered":"Bees and Dogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beltane\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Garlic Moon<\/p>\n<p>Bee check this morning.\u00a0 Colony 1 is about a week ahead of 2 and 3 due to my late release of the queens in those two colonies.\u00a0 None of them have brood in the top box, though there is <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-7605\" title=\"400_honey-extraction_0225\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/400_honey-extraction_0225-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"400_honey-extraction_0225\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/400_honey-extraction_0225-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/400_honey-extraction_0225.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>new pollen stores and honey.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve only had the top box on for a week, so I&#8217;m not expecting much until the next hive inspection.\u00a0 If I don&#8217;t see brood then, well, I don&#8217;t know what.<\/p>\n<p>All three colonies look healthy, plenty of bees and plenty of room.\u00a0 These bees, too, are so gentle.\u00a0 I can inspect the hives with just a veil, a long sleeved t-shirt and gardening gloves.\u00a0 So much better for the heat.<\/p>\n<p>Each colony still has stored honey in the frames I put into the top boxes, the first one less than the rest, but they still have some.\u00a0 I may need to get some feeder pails and some syrup, just to be sure.<\/p>\n<p>I feel more confident this year, more sure of what I&#8217;m doing and what I&#8217;m looking for when I do a hive inspection, but I&#8217;m still a long way from a\u00a0 knowledgeable bee keeper.<\/p>\n<p>Mark has started a second round of work on the fire pit, a project stalled three years ago by lagging energy on my part.\u00a0 He squared off the walls, has cut landscape cloth to put behind the granite paving stones I bought from the guy on Round Lake Boulevard and also put landscape cloth on the botton of the fire pit and covered it with sand.<\/p>\n<p>Gertie went outside this morning and wandered around the front yard.\u00a0 She moved slowly, feeling the trauma today probably more so than yesterday as the vet&#8217;s pain killer subsided.\u00a0 She&#8217;s still on two pain meds though, tramadol and rimadyl.\u00a0 I think she&#8217;s gonna be fine.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve seen battle wounds before.<\/p>\n<p>As I went to sleep last night, I said to Kate, &#8220;Just like an episode of Combat Hospital.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beltane\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Garlic Moon Bee check this morning.\u00a0 Colony 1 is about a week ahead of 2 and 3 due to my late release of the queens in those two colonies.\u00a0 None of them have brood in the top box, though there is new pollen stores and honey.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve only had the top box on &hellip;
