Five men came together tonight at the Black Forest.\u00a0 Brothers.\u00a0 Men who have stood shoulder to shoulder for over twenty years, through marriage and divorce, through conflict and calm.\u00a0 We sat outside, under a clear plastic roof that sprayed water on us while we talked when the wind blew up.\u00a0 The usual conversation.\u00a0 Mark’s knee.\u00a0 Getting better.\u00a0 Frank’s trip to Ireland.\u00a0 Everyone had a great time.\u00a0 Stefan’s sons.\u00a0 My brother.\u00a0 Bill and I talked computers, how to back up ancientrails, whether I might mine it for a book, or two.\u00a0 How I might redesign it.<\/p>\n
We went over each others lives, we know the history, the background, the context.\u00a0 We listened and nodded, ate our polish sausages and sauerkraut or lentil and sausage soup, felt the late heat of a stormy day begin to creep out from under the clouds.<\/p>\n
We see each other twice a month at least, sometimes more.\u00a0 Always we stay alert to each other, exchanging e-mails, funny and serious.<\/p>\n
