Good old Aristotle.\u00a0 A subtle mind, tutor to Alexander the Great and foe of Platonic idealism.\u00a0\u00a0 His work is dense to the point of impenetrability, at least to me, which did not augur well for a future in philosophy.<\/p>\n
This quote sounds like 7 Habits of Highly Successful People material, but Aristotle wrote way ahead of the 20th century obsession with self-help.\u00a0 It would be interesting to know what he would make of Covey’s material.<\/p>\n
Philosophical training sharpens the mind, enhances the ability to understand and appreciate the arguments of others, aids in the construction and self-critique of ideas and puts a solid platform under a life, a platform strong enough to withstand the ebb and flow of others opinions and one’s own inevitable missteps.<\/p>\n
Let’s take Aristotle at his out of context quote for a moment.<\/p>\n
Hmmm.\u00a0\u00a0 What happens over and over in my life?<\/p>\n
Reading.\u00a0 Writing.\u00a0 Politics.\u00a0 Working with art.\u00a0 Gardening.\u00a0 Bee keeping.\u00a0\u00a0 Dog tending.\u00a0 Travel.\u00a0 Driving.\u00a0 Watching TV. (does excellence fit in here?)\u00a0 Spending time with family.\u00a0 Grocery shopping.<\/p>\n
This one will repay a bit more pondering.\u00a0 What happens over and over in your life?\u00a0 What are your areas of excellence?<\/p>\n
