{"id":11819,"date":"2011-10-07T16:25:28","date_gmt":"2011-10-07T22:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=11819"},"modified":"2011-10-07T16:25:28","modified_gmt":"2011-10-07T22:25:28","slug":"a-carnegie-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=11819","title":{"rendered":"A Carnegie Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fall\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Autumn Moon<\/p>\n<p>Reading.\u00a0 Alexandria, Indiana had a Carnegie library, one of those brick and limestone buildings sprinkled throughout American small towns, so ubiquitous we give them little thought.\u00a0 Like the water tower they&#8217;ve always been there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Carnegie-Library.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11820\" title=\"Carnegie Library\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Carnegie-Library.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"117\" \/><\/a>Ours had a long flight of steps that went up to the solemn, curved stacks of the adult library, a place visited by kids only when they needed something up there, a rare occurrence.\u00a0 The library also had a concrete ramp with a slight curve that led down, below ground where the children&#8217;s books were.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring and early summer the concrete had a musty scent, cement and soil, a comforting, familiar smell that greeted me often as I made regular trips down the ramp.\u00a0 The library had summer reading programs complete with prizes and stickers and I loved them.\u00a0 Prizes for reading!\u00a0 A thing of wonder to this boy bookworm.<\/p>\n<p>The hours I spent down there, reading or finding books, fed a now lifelong habit and a love of books, not rare editions or signed first editions, but of books themselves, purveyors of wonder and mystery.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite book was the Silver Llama, a story of a young boy and his llama, somewhere in the Andes.\u00a0 I remember its silver cover, the rounded spine that always felt smooth against my thumb.\u00a0 Even after I quit reading it, I would visit it from time to time, just to fell the spine and see the dull shine of its silver.<\/p>\n<p>Libraries are still among my favorite places on earth, temples to generosity, human creativity and self education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fall\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Autumn Moon Reading.\u00a0 Alexandria, Indiana had a Carnegie library, one of those brick and limestone buildings sprinkled throughout American small towns, so ubiquitous we give them little thought.\u00a0 Like the water tower they&#8217;ve always been there.
