Bah, Humbug"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imbolc \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Woodpecker Moon<\/p>\n<p>OK, so maybe having the ex on your facebook friends list is odd, but we do share a son and besides, hey we gitta along. \u00a0Anyhow she posts a facebook photo of her with her latest guy&#8211;who lives, weirdly enough, in Andover not far from us. \u00a0She&#8217;s dressed as Cher, he&#8217;s dressed as Bono.<\/p>\n<p>She looks like she&#8217;s having fun. \u00a0Then I think, in one of those places it&#8217;s not wise to go but who tells the mind what paths it can travel, what do I do for fun? \u00a0Ooops. \u00a0OK. \u00a0Can&#8217;t think of anything. \u00a0I asked Kate last night what we do for fun. \u00a0She couldn&#8217;t think of anything either.<\/p>\n<p>OMG. \u00a0Dreary northern europeans celebrating the winter solstice with a candle. \u00a0That sort of thing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/edited-train-station.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13157\" title=\"edited train station\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/edited-train-station.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/edited-train-station.jpg 670w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/edited-train-station-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/a>As I&#8217;m wont to do when perplexed, I picked up my bible, my word bible that is, the Oxford English Dictionary (literally the best dollar I ever spent since I got this two volume complete version back when the History Book Club sold them as comeons for new customers) and look up fun.<\/p>\n<p>Once in a while things turn out really well. \u00a0There are two entries, one for a noun and one for a verb. \u00a0In both cases the 1st, therefore dominant (and occasionally obsolete) definition is: \u00a0a cheat, a hoax, a trick. \u00a0The other definitions aren&#8217;t much better. \u00a02. n. \u00a0diversion, amusement, sport jocularity, drollery. \u00a0and 2. to make fun or sport, to indulge in fun, to joke. Not much to worry about not having much of, I decided.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I wondered, what about enjoyment or delight? \u00a0They&#8217;re different. \u00a0Delight: \u00a0pleasure, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cropped8002011-07-26_1000.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13158\" title=\"cropped8002011 07 26_1000\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cropped8002011-07-26_1000.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cropped8002011-07-26_1000.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/cropped8002011-07-26_1000-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a>joy or gratification felt in a high degree. \u00a0Enjoy: \u00a0to be in joy or in a joyous state, to manifest joy, exult, rejoice.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the light bulb: \u00a0joy 2.b \u00a0to experience pleasure, be happy now chiefly to find pleasure in an occasion of festivity or social intercourse.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s the smoking gun of extroversion&#8211;now chiefly to find pleasure in an occasion of festivity or social intercourse.<\/p>\n<p>In this youth drenched, extroversion drunk country of ours, it&#8217;s possible for those of us introverts to lose sight of what delights us, what we enjoy. (admission: \u00a0Kate wondered whether we should look at what we enjoy.)<\/p>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s weird, but Latin delights me. \u00a0After a struggle with a verse or a grammatical construction, at that moment when the obfuscation clears, delight. \u00a0Planting in the spring. \u00a0Caring for the bees. \u00a0Travel. \u00a0Writing. \u00a0Being with the grandkids. \u00a0Seeing our kids. \u00a0Reading.
