{"id":1406,"date":"2008-11-16T16:45:20","date_gmt":"2008-11-16T22:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=1406"},"modified":"2008-11-16T16:45:20","modified_gmt":"2008-11-16T22:45:20","slug":"working-on-the-forest-edge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=1406","title":{"rendered":"Working on the Forest Edge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>32\u00a0 bar steep rise\u00a0 30.08\u00a0 0mph NW\u00a0 Windchill 31\u00a0\u00a0 Samhain<\/p>\n<p>Waning Gibbous Dark Moon<\/p>\n<p>Got groceries at Festival.\u00a0 Grocery prices have gone up, maybe 15-20%.\u00a0 Many people bought their Thanksgiving turkeys from a young woman with a table set up beside the butcher&#8217;s counter.\u00a0 Christmas music played in the background, in sympathy, I guess, with the lonely retailers who expect no Christmas present purchases this year.<\/p>\n<p>Once again I purchased produce unrecognizable to the check-out person, a friendly girl of about 18.\u00a0 Is this a rutabaga?\u00a0 No, jicama.\u00a0 Is this a sweet potato?\u00a0 No, a yam.\u00a0 Oh, do they taste different?\u00a0 Yes and have different colors, too.\u00a0 What about these, are they good?\u00a0 Rambuta.\u00a0 Yes, just slice around the middle and take the top off.\u00a0 Are they sweet?\u00a0 Yes, if you like sweet, you&#8217;ll like these.\u00a0 They&#8217;re not too sweet, are they?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Medium.<\/p>\n<p>Then I was on my way with my plastic bags, once again shopping without the cloth bags I&#8217;ve purchased for the purpose.\u00a0\u00a0 I wish they&#8217;d hop in the car without my having to remember.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/orchard-week-1frtrees400006.jpg\" title=\"orchard-week-1frtrees400006.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/orchard-week-1frtrees400006.jpg\" alt=\"orchard-week-1frtrees400006.jpg\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>The rest of the morning I cleared ground along the forest edge so I can put down black plastic, then mulch, to kill all the flora we do not want in the way when we plant the crops that will distract the birds from our orchard.\u00a0 They will provide a height sensitive edge, stair stepping back toward the poplars, ash, cedar, oak, acacia and pin cherry behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Built up a good appetite.\u00a0 Still eating the 11-bean soup I made a week and a half or so ago.\u00a0 Nap.<\/p>\n<p>Now, after the nap, I&#8217;m doing inside things I&#8217;ve held off until I had a bit of time in the afternoon.\u00a0 I put ink cartridges in my Canon Pixma printer.\u00a0 This is a real rip-off.\u00a0 Even when printing only black, like copies, it uses up colored ink.\u00a0 This means that you have to replace the color cartridges as often as the black ones.\u00a0 Guess what?\u00a0 The colored cartridges are expensive.\u00a0 Anyone with this printer as their primary printer pays a lot for the privilege.\u00a0 My laserjet printer handles black and white in an economical manner.<\/p>\n<p>Also cleaned the carpet in the study.\u00a0 Dogs leave the occasional trail.\u00a0 Also cleaned the stairs.\u00a0 Dogs, again.<\/p>\n<p>Kate&#8217;s upstairs threshing beans from our garden.\u00a0 I look forward to using them in recipes over the course of the winter.<\/p>\n<p>The cones are finally on the zone 5 grasses in the perennial garden.\u00a0 I hope they survive.\u00a0 They were a nice, delicate touch behind the lilies, iris and, later, the iris and sedum.<\/p>\n<p>Oh.
