{"id":14607,"date":"2012-06-07T10:24:44","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T16:24:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=14607"},"modified":"2012-06-09T20:48:50","modified_gmt":"2012-06-10T02:48:50","slug":"bagging-and-weeding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=14607","title":{"rendered":"Bagging and Weeding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beltane \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Garlic Moon<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cropped2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-14608\" title=\"cropped2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cropped2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"314\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cropped2.jpg 448w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cropped2-261x300.jpg 261w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/><\/a>Still bagging apples, plums and pears, too. \u00a0This seems like a lot of work, but for our size orchard it makes sense. \u00a0Whether you could scale it up to commercial orchards I don&#8217;t know. \u00a0Would depend on access to cheap, competent help at the right time of year. \u00a0The rewards are certainly there. \u00a0A fruit crop without the worms that come from insects depositing eggs on the fruit&#8217;s surface or under its skin. \u00a0In a bad year the difference between a decent crop and almost no crop would be the bags.<\/p>\n<p>Each year the land and the plants speak to the gardener. \u00a0So a key part of gardening, even critical, is listening skill. \u00a0If you don&#8217;t hear the news that there is not enough light here, no matter how many7 times you plan the zinnias in the shade you will be disappointed. \u00a0If the stunted growth and yellowed leaves of a vegetable doesn&#8217;t tell you the soil needs amending, you will not have good vegetable crops. \u00a0If wormy fruit doesn&#8217;t tell you you need to do something, you&#8217;ll have poor apple and pear and plum crops each year.<\/p>\n<p>Kate takes care of another form of communication: \u00a0weeds. \u00a0Weeds are just a plant out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cropped.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-14609\" title=\"cropped\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cropped-300x253.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cropped-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/cropped.jpg 754w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>place so there&#8217;s nothing inherently wrong with them. \u00a0You just don&#8217;t want them there. \u00a0Usually natives or imported exotics, weeds are plants that have found what I call a happy home, a place where they can thrive. \u00a0That means weeds can crowd out, out feed, sometimes frankly poison plants you want to grown.<\/p>\n<p>Often vegetables and flowers we want to grow are not native to our region, may not even be native to our gardening zone. \u00a0Any pressure on their growth makes them more vulnerable to weed competition. \u00a0So often time the gardener is in the peculiar position of championing plants that may not want to grow in your particular garden while trying to eliminate those that are perfectly happy there. \u00a0Some times you can use natives, many only use natives these days, and they make gardening much simpler. \u00a0Since they grow like weeds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beltane \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Garlic Moon Still bagging apples, plums and pears, too. \u00a0This seems like a lot of work, but for our size orchard it makes sense. \u00a0Whether you &hellip;
