She is known for developing a variation on the cinquain now referred to as the &#8220;American cinquain.&#8221;*<\/p>\n<p>*a class of\u00a0<a title=\"Poetry\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poetry\">poetic<\/a>\u00a0forms that employ a 5-line pattern. Earlier used to describe any five-line form, it now refers to one of several forms that are defined by specific rules and guidelines.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Adelaide Crapsey\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adelaide_Crapsey\">Adelaide Crapsey<\/a>\u00a0invented the modern form, known as American Cinquain<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinquain#cite_note-1\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinquain#cite_note-2\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0inspired by Japanese\u00a0<a title=\"Haiku\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haiku\">haiku<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Tanka\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tanka\">tanka<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinquain#cite_note-3\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-toleostheory_4-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinquain#cite_note-toleostheory-4\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0akin in spirit to that of the\u00a0<a title=\"Imagism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imagism\">Imagists<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-5\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinquain#cite_note-5\">[6]<\/a>.<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The first, fundamental form is a stanza of five lines of accentual verse, in which the lines comprise, in order, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 1 stresses.<\/p>\n<p>Then Crapsey decided to make the criterion a stanza of five lines of accentual-syllabic verse, in which the lines comprise, in order, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 1 stresses and 2, 4, 6, 8, and 2 syllables.
