An Obama victory. \u00a0A technical victory on a very technical climb. \u00a0Unemployment was too high. \u00a0His popularity too low. \u00a0There was a rabidly energetic right-wing fringe that gained real traction and power. \u00a0The economy struggled like a punch-drunk fighter, getting up, weaving, falling down, standing up. \u00a0It was the scenario in which an incumbent loses.<\/p>\n
His campaign focused on battleground states with organizing at the grassroots level. \u00a0He managed to paint Romney as an out of touch rich guy. \u00a0 The Obama campaign stayed on message. \u00a0It was uninspiring. \u00a0It was ugly. \u00a0But it was bruising politics at its best. \u00a0This one will be studied for a long time. \u00a0Especially if Romney’s persistent lead in the popular vote holds up.<\/p>\n
The National Journal says this election comes with no mandate. \u00a0Well, duh. \u00a0A divided electorate is not going to hand out atta boys. \u00a0Nope, a mandate will have to be earned, if that’s possible. \u00a0I’ll settle for more judicial appointments, defense of the Affordable Health Care act and something decent in regards to climate change.<\/p>\n
The lunatic fringe lost two probable wins in senate races with Todd Aikin in Missouri and\u00a0Richard Mourdock in Indiana losing what were thought safe Republican seats. \u00a0They represent an anti-science,\u00a0misogynistic, historical fantasy version of politics. \u00a0William Cullen Bryant would be proud.<\/p>\n
