{"id":17088,"date":"2012-11-07T10:04:53","date_gmt":"2012-11-07T16:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=17088"},"modified":"2016-05-10T14:18:56","modified_gmt":"2016-05-10T20:18:56","slug":"wow-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=17088","title":{"rendered":"Wow."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Samhain \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Fallowturn Moon<\/p>\n<h3>Amendments &#8211; MN\u00a0100% reporting<\/h3>\n<table cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td>For<\/td>\n<td>Against<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Marriage<\/td>\n<td>48%<\/td>\n<td>52%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Photo ID<\/td>\n<td>46%<\/td>\n<td>53%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Source: AP and MN Secretary of State<\/p>\n<p>Wow. \u00a0Just wow. \u00a0Most hopeful sign to me of the evening? \u00a0The return of the Minnesota legislature to DFL hands. \u00a0Second most hopeful. \u00a0Apparent defeat of the constitutional amendments. \u00a0Third. \u00a0Senate gains by the Dems. \u00a0Fourth. \u00a0Obama did win.<\/p>\n<p>In the first instance I&#8217;d felt the Minnesota I adopted in the early 1970&#8217;s had begun to slip away, headed toward a cold Tennessee or Nebraska. \u00a0After 8 years of Pawlenty and the no new taxes madness, after four years of Jesse Ventura who made automobile license fees safe for owners of Porsches, it seemed that the compassionate, communal, progressive state I immigrated to in 1971 had signed up with the go it alone, free market (as long as they work for us), flag-wavers. \u00a0It made me feel isolated.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m happy to say we&#8217;ve gone for Obama, re-elected a DFL senator, come close to unseating Michelle Bachmann and, it seems right now, defeated two fearful, ideological amendments to our constitution: \u00a0voter id and marriage limited to a man and a woman. \u00a0I&#8217;m most proud of the defeats of the amendments, if the vote counts hold, because they have been victorious in most places (voter id) and in every place (marriage) they&#8217;ve been put forward. \u00a0This is Minnesota showing it will not be captive to the fear moguls. \u00a0Yes!<\/p>\n<p>The Senate gains by the Democrats, apposite to the predicted Senate capture by the Republicans, mean we&#8217;re closer than ever to cloture vote totals. \u00a0If only a handful of Republican senators can stiff arm the extremists in their party, we may be able to get something done in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Obama&#8217;s win. \u00a0He will get to name Supreme Court justices.
