When I woke up yesterday, my right eye began to jiggle back and forth.\u00a0 The room began to sway.\u00a0 OMG as the kid’s say.\u00a0 I stumbled to the bathroom, hitting a painting on the wall.\u00a0 My insides tried to come outside and a cold, clammy sweat broke out all over my body.\u00a0 Yikes!<\/p>\n
At first I thought.\u00a0 Flu.\u00a0 So I waited for everything to calm down.\u00a0 Everything did not calm down.\u00a0 That was I hollered for Kate.\u00a0 “Kate!”<\/p>\n
She came and took in what was going on.\u00a0 “Smile for me.”\u00a0 she said.\u00a0 A peculiar response unless your spouse has a medical degree.\u00a0 I smiled my most winning smile.\u00a0 “That’s a test for stroke.”\u00a0 Oh.\u00a0 I passed.\u00a0\u00a0 Thank god.<\/p>\n
“Where’s your blood pressure cuff?”\u00a0 I keep one to take my pressure every now and then.\u00a0 She got it.\u00a0 122\/62.\u00a0 Strange for a guy with essential hypertension.\u00a0 But good news to her.<\/p>\n
She had me diagnosed.\u00a0 Labyrinthitis.\u00a0 A viral infection of the inner ear that plays havoc with balance.\u00a0 Each time I moved my body put me into state I had experienced in full only once before.\u00a0 That time came when I found myself in an airplane bathroom during\u00a0 high turbulence.\u00a0 The stewardesses though I was having a heart attack.\u00a0 Hell, so did I.\u00a0 But not Kate.\u00a0 She got me a wheel chair, we got off the plane and waited until I calmed down.<\/p>\n
This deal though did not allow the body to calm down.\u00a0 I had one position that did not produce vertigo and nausea.\u00a0 I stayed in for the whole day.<\/p>\n
Kate got me some fancy anti-emetics that helped a lot.\u00a0 She said it would lift in a day and it has.\u00a0 I can move around now, but slowly.\u00a0 And, oh, by the way she also said, “You can’t drive for six weeks.”\u00a0 Six weeks!<\/p>\n
Well, better grounded than dead, I always say.<\/p>\n
