{"id":17806,"date":"2013-01-05T16:28:05","date_gmt":"2013-01-05T22:28:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=17806"},"modified":"2016-04-30T14:48:02","modified_gmt":"2016-04-30T20:48:02","slug":"the-tlf-maintains-its-presence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=17806","title":{"rendered":"The TLF Maintains Its Presence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Winter \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Moon of the Winter Solstice<\/p>\n<p>On the way back from buying groceries I encountered the TLF again. \u00a0The TLF long time readers of this blog might recall is the Turkey Liberation Front. \u00a0I gave this rafter or gang (look it up) their name when I encountered their predecessor several years ago returning from the same store with additional butter for the Thanksgiving dinner then underway. \u00a0That first rafter was smaller, less than 10, but this one had perhaps 18-20, mostly adults, but a few young adults. \u00a0Their feathers were a rich dark brown, lustrous.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/mnwxchaser.blogspot.com\/2010\/02\/smoke-gray-color-phase-wild-turkey.html\">Great Northern Sky<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Round Lake gathers enthusiasts of various sorts, some with more common sense than others. \u00a0The ice fishermen are staid, quiet types. \u00a0Ice houses or small tents covering their holes, they sit still, waiting for something to happen.<\/p>\n<p>The snowmobiles you would expect though there&#8217;s been fewer of them than normal this year.<\/p>\n<p>This year has drawn several ATV drivers and, to my surprise, one dirt biker. \u00a0The first I&#8217;ve seen though I know it&#8217;s done. \u00a0I heard the noise, the steady drone of a small engine, looked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ICE_THICKNESS.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17808\" title=\"ICE_THICKNESS\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ICE_THICKNESS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"392\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ICE_THICKNESS.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ICE_THICKNESS-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><\/a>out over the lake expecting to see a snowmobile when what to my wondering eyes should appear but some kid on a motor bike riding in circles, defying the friction defeating ice with the occasional part sideways skid. \u00a0Nobody&#8217;s out there with their truck or car this year. \u00a0Wise.<\/p>\n<p>(I picked this up from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.com\/outlook\/weather-news\/news\/articles\/great-lakes-ice-status_2010-03-04\">national weather website<\/a>. \u00a0But they&#8217;re using our DNR&#8217;s illustrations.)<\/p>\n<p>Last week I read in the newspaper the following advice for the cold weather over New Years. \u00a0Keep your gas tank half full. \u00a0Pack winter boots and warm coats. \u00a0Call ahead and let people know when you plan to arrive. \u00a0That sort of thing. \u00a0We&#8217;ve also had the illustration showing what thickness of ice can bear what kind of weight.<\/p>\n<p>Minnesotans take this kind of thing for granted, part of the season. \u00a0But imagine you were a visitor here. \u00a0Reading this stuff. \u00a0With a rental car. \u00a0No wonder people don&#8217;t move here in droves in spite of the great cultural and political life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Winter \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Moon of the Winter Solstice On the way back from buying groceries I encountered the TLF again. \u00a0The TLF long time readers of this &hellip;
