{"id":18767,"date":"2013-02-28T16:53:19","date_gmt":"2013-02-28T22:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=18767"},"modified":"2013-02-28T16:53:19","modified_gmt":"2013-02-28T22:53:19","slug":"falling-in-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=18767","title":{"rendered":"Falling in Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imbolc \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Valentine Moon<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really fell in love with that part of the world,\u201d says Cynthia Hopkins of the Arctic, where she journeyed with other artists in 2010. \u201cI also fell in love with the boat we were on.\u201d \u00a0author of This Clement World opening at the Guthrie<\/p>\n<p>My promiscuity. \u00a0I shamelessly fall in love over and over again when I travel. \u00a0Bangkok&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Romania-May-2012_2012-05-27_4457.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-18768\" title=\"Romania  May 2012_2012 05 27_4457\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Romania-May-2012_2012-05-27_4457.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Romania-May-2012_2012-05-27_4457.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Romania-May-2012_2012-05-27_4457-300x269.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a>quirky Chinatown, especially on the weekend with all those restaurants set up on the sidewalks and folks walking in the densely trafficked street. \u00a0Angkor in all its viney, scorpion infested, land-mined Hindu strangeness. \u00a0Inverness and its smoky river, walking there with Kate. \u00a0Why do we ever have to leave? \u00a0That little restaurant, Crispie&#8217;s was it, just down from the Internazionale in Rome. \u00a0The Ringstrasse in Vienna. \u00a0The left bank in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>(oh, yeah, Romania. \u00a0A more recent love.)<\/p>\n<p>Then there was Ushuaia, that frowsy scamp of a town as far south as you can get in the Americas. \u00a0And, god, just before her, those Chilean fjords. \u00a0Let me off the boat. \u00a0Give me a small house, an internet connection and forget about me until, well, forever. \u00a0Montevideo, too. \u00a0Friendly, beefy, colorful. \u00a0Old world European with a Latin twist.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose I&#8217;d have to mention those old, first loves, too. \u00a0Chicago, city of roast beef sandwiches, the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, Hyde Park. \u00a0D.C. and all its power, its monuments and museums. \u00a0And yes, like so many before me, I had a brief fling with San Francisco, but she&#8217;s so expensive, a real high-maintenance gal.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are a few I keep, stable-like, harems of places that I visit like a ghost Sultan, flitting in and out, but always returning for one more time. \u00a0Lake Superior, especially the true north shore, the part in Ontario. \u00a0The Georgian bay of Lake Huron. \u00a0Those rocky mountains lying just at the limits of my home turf here in the U.S. \u00a0All majesty and purple.<\/p>\n<p>Savannah and Charleston, yes. \u00a0The south is a guilty pleasure, that one with the dark desires, visited always with an eye to the road back north. \u00a0New Orleans, oh yes. \u00a0Dark queen of the south. \u00a0I&#8217;m sure I could return to the\u00a0Okefenokee\u00a0swamp. \u00a0And I confess to two trips to Red Cloud, Nebraska. \u00a0Those Grand Tetons. \u00a0Yes. \u00a0Cody, Wyoming.
