{"id":20576,"date":"2013-06-10T14:54:33","date_gmt":"2013-06-10T20:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=20576"},"modified":"2016-05-09T14:03:06","modified_gmt":"2016-05-09T20:03:06","slug":"shoulder-pain-the-continuing-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=20576","title":{"rendered":"Shoulder Pain:  The Continuing Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beltane \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Solstice Moon<\/p>\n<p>My shoulder started hurting, bad, sometime in January, late. \u00a0Since I had just had an episode of patella-femoral syndrome, knee pain, that I had fought off with rest, I decided to try the same with the shoulder pain. \u00a0I stopped my resistance work, then took off for D.C. to see the pre-Raphaelite exhibit. \u00a0By the time I got back the acute phase of the pain had ended. \u00a0I went back to my regular workouts.<\/p>\n<p>Still, there were lingering problems. \u00a0I couldn&#8217;t lift a grocery bag from below my waist up on to the counter. \u00a0At night, sometimes before sleep, pain localized in my bicep would be so intense I had trouble getting to sleep. \u00a0Though I always did. \u00a0Putting on a jacket hurt as did flipping the duvet up to get it straightened out after a nap or in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>None of this was enough to cause me a lot of discomfort and most of the time I forgot about it, something I couldn&#8217;t do while it was acute. \u00a0Still, it was there and when it did appear it made me feel just a little less than I wanted to be. \u00a0At some point, too, when I did bicep curls and chest presses, my left bicep would weaken and stop working. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t want to stop my workouts for this minor of a problem so I just stayed away from the exercises that bugged my arm.<\/p>\n<p>I was, in other words, glad to start physical therapy. \u00a0I waited a while to get the therapist my orthopedist had recommended. \u00a0It was good choice; David is quick and reassuring. \u00a0Over the last two weeks I&#8217;ve done the exercises, simple things. \u00a0At first mostly stretching. \u00a0Last week David added some strengthening exercises.<\/p>\n<p>I no longer have the pain before I go to sleep though I sometimes wake up to some pain. \u00a0In general the arm is much less sensitive, though I still have some problem putting on a coat or flipping the duvet, but it is much reduced. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been able to return to the bicep curls and the chest presses.<\/p>\n<p>It amazes me that this regular series of very small interventions can have such a significant effect. \u00a0And what I like best?
