{"id":21174,"date":"2013-07-12T09:23:39","date_gmt":"2013-07-12T15:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=21174"},"modified":"2013-07-12T09:23:39","modified_gmt":"2013-07-12T15:23:39","slug":"lilies-leeks-and-lumber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=21174","title":{"rendered":"Lilies, Leeks and Lumber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Summer \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 First Harvest Moon<\/p>\n<p>Today, again, harvesting trees. \u00a0This time black locust, a thorny tree that grows fast and germinates easily. \u00a0In olden days fence posts, foundation posts, anything requiring a sturdy rot-resistant wood were common uses of the black locust. \u00a0This tree will get used as firewood for the great Woolly ingathering here on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Other hardwood trees like oak, in particular, but ash and maple and others as well, require a year or two of drying to get their moisture content below 20%. \u00a0Black locust is a low moisture wood even when it&#8217;s alive.<\/p>\n<p>In felling this tree my directional cut was at a slight angle and the tree came down on our vegetable garden fence. \u00a0But. \u00a0Fortuna was with me. \u00a0The main branch that hit the fence landed right on top of a fence post, square cedar. It didn&#8217;t mind at all. \u00a0May have sunk a bit lower in the earth.
