{"id":21652,"date":"2013-08-15T08:29:27","date_gmt":"2013-08-15T14:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=21652"},"modified":"2013-08-15T08:29:27","modified_gmt":"2013-08-15T14:29:27","slug":"extraction-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=21652","title":{"rendered":"Extraction Plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>8\/10\/2013\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lughnasa\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State Fair Moon<\/p>\n<p>Honey extraction coming up on August 20\/21.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to get ready on that Tuesday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMAG0705.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21614\" alt=\"IMAG0705\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMAG0705-300x169.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMAG0705-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/IMAG0705-1024x577.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>which means cardboard on the kitchen floor and plastic all over, too.\u00a0 It also means bolting our extractor stand to a piece of plywood with 2&#215;4 lengths nailed to it for the stand\u2019s braces, getting the uncapping tank set up and all the filters and bottling equipment cleaned out and ready for action.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday I\u2019ll begin by using honey robber to move the bees out of the honey super, one super at a time.\u00a0 This involves putting a bit of a chemical on a felt backing contained in a super-sized wooden box and putting that box over the super.\u00a0 This drives the bees down and allows me to get a bee free super off and onto a pallet I\u2019ll have waiting on my truck dolly.\u00a0 I\u2019ll repeat this six times, covering the stack of supers each time I add a super to keep the bees away.<\/p>\n<p>Once all six supers are off, I\u2019ll wheel them into the garage and carry them, still covered, into the kitchen.\u00a0 Kate will have the uncapping knife warmed up and will start uncapping.\u00a0 When we have six frames uncapped, they\u2019ll go in the extractor where they will spin as centrifugal force pulls the honey out of the comb.\u00a0 This process continues until all frames, as many as 54, certainly 40, have the honey drained from them.\u00a0 That\u2019s when filtering and bottling begins.\u00a0 A big process, lots of steps, but easier each time we\u2019ve done it.\u00a0 Practice makes lots of bottled honey.<\/p>\n<p>After all this, of course, there\u2019s selling it.\u00a0 This is going to be a crop well beyond our needs so getting some cash out of it to defray the considerable money we\u2019ve already sunk into bee-keeping makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>8\/10\/2013\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Lughnasa\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State Fair Moon Honey extraction coming up on August 20\/21.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to get ready on that Tuesday, which means cardboard on the kitchen floor and plastic all over, too.\u00a0 It also means bolting our extractor stand to a piece of plywood with 2&#215;4 lengths nailed to it for the stand\u2019s braces, getting &hellip;
