{"id":22793,"date":"2013-10-23T12:50:24","date_gmt":"2013-10-23T18:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=22793"},"modified":"2016-05-08T16:04:11","modified_gmt":"2016-05-08T22:04:11","slug":"around-and-around-and-around-we-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=22793","title":{"rendered":"Around and Around and Around We Go"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fall \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Samhain Moon<\/p>\n<p>Interesting convergence. \u00a0In Ovid today I translated some verses about the silver age in which Jupiter created four seasons from summer, brief spring, winter and autumn. \u00a0After finishing this work, I went out and joined Kate, already at work in the garden. \u00a0Small pellets of snow fell.<\/p>\n<p><i>(The Close of the Silver Age<\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0<a title=\"Lucas Cranach the Elder\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lucas_Cranach_the_Elder\">Lucas Cranach the Elder<\/a>, c. 1527-35)<\/p>\n<p>We went into the orchard. \u00a0Kate pulled back the landscape cloth around the remaining trees while I broadcast the fertilizer, sprayed with biotill and then worked them both into the top three inches of soil. \u00a0While she replaced the landscape cloth, I shoveled soil, mostly sand, back into two large holes dug by our energetic girls, Vega and Rigel.<\/p>\n<p>At one moment I looked up at a tall Norway pine and felt a kinship with Ovid and those farmers in long ago Latium. \u00a0We had similar things to do at similar times of year.<\/p>\n<p>The word annum popped up from today&#8217;s translating. \u00a0You know, I imagine, that it translates as year, but you might not know that its primary meanings are:\u00a0<i>a circuit<\/i>,\u00a0<i>circular course<\/i>,\u00a0<i>periodical return. \u00a0<\/i>In one sense this is obvious of course, but that term we use frequently could orient us not to linear time, as we tend to use it, but to cyclical time.<\/p>\n<p>When I say, I am 66 years old, we tend to think, oh. \u00a0Born 66 years from this date. \u00a0But that&#8217;s not what it really means. \u00a0It really means I have experienced a full year 66 times. \u00a0The year itself, if we&#8217;re true to its Latin roots, is not a one after the other marker of chronos, but a complete set, 4 seasons here in the temperate latitudes, finished and done with each winter, begun anew each spring. \u00a0Or whenever you want to break beginning and ending.<\/p>\n<p>We then start over again. \u00a0Another year as we often say. \u00a0Yes, just so. \u00a0Another year. \u00a0This time in the next year I&#8217;ll be fertilizing the orchard. \u00a0As I have this year. \u00a0So that moment of apocalypse when the earth becomes changed and brand new?
