{"id":23227,"date":"2013-11-18T16:04:47","date_gmt":"2013-11-18T22:04:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=23227"},"modified":"2016-05-08T11:22:13","modified_gmt":"2016-05-08T17:22:13","slug":"the-next-ice-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=23227","title":{"rendered":"The Next Ice Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Samhain \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Thanksgiving Moon<\/p>\n<p>A beautiful day outside. \u00a0Cerulean sky dotted with torn off candy cotton chunks of cumulus. \u00a0A bright sun. \u00a0Now all we need is snow. \u00a0As this winter bears down on us, even though slowly, I find myself occasionally feeling sad about the children of Minnesota future who will not know the onset of deep winter, cold that makes you stand up straight and say, Oh.<\/p>\n<p>They will know, I realized, the long nights of winter still. \u00a0Global warming has no effect on the tilt of the earth, but it seems strange to think of the Winter Solstice night coming in Minnesota and not needing a parka to be out celebrating it. \u00a0They will not, of course, no any different, it will be for them the way things have always been. \u00a0Who&#8217;s to say that will be bad? \u00a0At least from an emotional perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Then again the Holocene has encompassed the rise and rise of humans from veldt to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/glacier1000.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-23229\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/glacier1000.jpg\" alt=\"glacier1000\" width=\"361\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/glacier1000.jpg 1001w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/glacier1000-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><\/a>moon and it is only 11,000 plus years old. \u00a0We take it as normal. \u00a0Really, it&#8217;s just an interglacial, as geologists call the warm periods beyond the periodic advances of the ice sheets that define an ice age.<\/p>\n<p>The last one is not completely over as this shot I took in the Chilean fjords shows.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to forget that the interglacials are the exception and ice cover the rule over the last couple of million years . \u00a0The normal interglacial lasts around 10,000 years and we&#8217;re overdue for a change.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, global warming will put off the next ice age, but eventually fossil fuels will either all be burned or we will have stopped burning them. \u00a0 Then, the atmosphere will lose carbon by its reabsorption into the oceans and back into carbonate minerals.
