{"id":23313,"date":"2013-11-23T22:56:45","date_gmt":"2013-11-24T04:56:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=23313"},"modified":"2016-04-30T09:56:28","modified_gmt":"2016-04-30T15:56:28","slug":"absence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=23313","title":{"rendered":"Absence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Samhain \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Thanksgiving Moon<\/p>\n<p>Driving home from the grocery store today I went past the street down which Dick Mestrich used to live. \u00a0Used to live in the sense that he died a couple of years ago. \u00a0It felt like there was a hole there at the end of the street, a place where my knowing went and came back with a false report, an absence.<\/p>\n<p>It led me to think what it would be like if I still lived in my hometown of Alexandria, a town of around 5,000. \u00a0I knew people on most streets, classmates, friends of classmates, friends of my parents, business owners, people from church. \u00a0By now, at age 66, I can drive past many homes where my knowing would report an absence. \u00a0Jim Ragsdale out on Harrison Street. \u00a0Pancreatic Cancer. \u00a0Richard Lawson and Richard Porter out south on Harrison, Alexandria&#8217;s main street. \u00a0Richard Lawson from injuries sustained in Vietnam, Richard Porter from a fast-moving disease. \u00a0Sherry Basset. \u00a0Dennis Sizelove, died<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Class-of-1965-Float-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-23315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Class-of-1965-Float-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Class of 1965 Float (2)\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Class-of-1965-Float-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Class-of-1965-Float-2.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> in Vietnam. \u00a0Even Karl Kyle the owner of the funeral home that sat diagonally from our house and where my mom&#8217;s funeral was held. \u00a0Mom and Dad, of course.<\/p>\n<p>As we get older the list gets longer, places where our knowing no longer functions, a hole in our social fabric.<\/p>\n<p>Regina Schmidt, too. \u00a0Here. \u00a0Moon. \u00a0I&#8217;m aware that this is how it has been and how it will be. \u00a0Death changes life even for the living. \u00a0Why this came up for me today, I don&#8217;t know.
