Sister Mary had a chance to keynote a conference on education. \u00a0She’s spoken at several conferences, but never keynoted before. \u00a0An honor. \u00a0But.<\/p>\n
She wrote that her flight to the island of Java had been canceled and she would not be able to make it to the conference. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Volcanic eruption. \u00a0Mt. Kelud. (see right)<\/p>\n
It grounded planes and caused tens of thousands of people to flee. \u00a0I wrote back and said that was a new one for this flatlander, located mid-continent. \u00a0Snow, yes. \u00a0Ice, yes. \u00a0Even flooding. \u00a0But volcanic eruption? \u00a0Quite the exotic reason for cancellation sitting in Minnesota. \u00a0Not so exotic in Indonesia, a very volcanically active and earthquake active region of the world. \u00a0It is, too, the fourth largest nation in the world by population.<\/p>\n
