\nClouds with sun.\u00a0 Kauai weather has more fluctuation than Maui\u2019s.\u00a0 I like it.\u00a0 Rain, sun and volcanic soil are a potent combination for plant growth.\u00a0 The evidence is everywhere.<\/p>\n
Kate and I noticed an egret in a profuse plant.\u00a0 He stood on a branch, launched his sinuous neck down, into the foliage, as if he were hunting in a pond.\u00a0 He came up with a white wriggly something caught in between two orange halves of his beak.<\/p>\n
I had ahi sashimi last night, the third or fourth time I\u2019ve had this treat.\u00a0 The Garden Salad had jicama and grapefruit with peanuts. Tasty.\u00a0 And plenty.\u00a0 Yet, we went ahead and ordered pad thai, which we did not need.\u00a0 It came wrapped in a flattened, cooked egg.\u00a0 Most of it came home to our in-room refrigerator.<\/p>\n
The Big Save market in Port Allen was interesting.\u00a0 Grocery stores always reveal the culture as clearly as any other institution.\u00a0 Here you\u00a0could find Korean and Japanese foodstuffs, plenty of fresh produce, lots of beach paraphernalia and an interesting collection of fresh fruits:\u00a0 papaya, ron baton lychee nuts and apple bananas.<\/p>\n
I had forgotten how curvy the road up to Waimea Canyon is.\u00a0 Fun to drive.\u00a0 The view coming back down lays out the Pacific for miles and the small communities that about it.<\/p>\n
We passed the Waimea Plantation Cottages on our way yesterday.\u00a0 We stayed there in 1998.\u00a0 The cottages are old plantation homes made by sugar cane workers and have a unique single board construction.\u00a0 Kate said she\u2019d go back there if they added air conditioning.<\/p>\n
At the Waimea General Store I admired the Nihau\u00a0jewelry.\u00a0 Lei\u2019s, necklaces and earrings made from tiny, tiny shells and matched for color.\u00a0 I remembered wanting some of this, but I forgot why I hadn\u2019t bought any the\u00a0last time we were here.\u00a0 A nice lei, the lady told me,\u00a0was\u00a019.95.\u00a0 I thought, great. I\u2019ll buy that one, then.\u00a0 She turned it over and the price was $1,995.00!\u00a0 Oh, yeah, now\u00a0I remember.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re headed for a day exploring in a different direction from yesterday.
