{"id":3039,"date":"2009-07-08T14:20:33","date_gmt":"2009-07-08T20:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=3039"},"modified":"2009-07-08T14:20:33","modified_gmt":"2009-07-08T20:20:33","slug":"zoos-and-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=3039","title":{"rendered":"Zoos and Us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Summer\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Full Summer Moon<\/p>\n<p>Zoos have their detractors, but to this guy they stir a sense of wonder.\u00a0 Two star tortoises walked their sandy space at an elegant trot.\u00a0 Made me wonder what speed seems like to a tortoise.\u00a0 Were they flyin&#8217;?\u00a0 Hey, dude, slow down.\u00a0 Not sure, but when the tortoise in front slowed, the other, tail-gating so close that his head was under the rear of the others shell, would bite the leader on the right leg.\u00a0 This always made the other guy surge ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Not far from these guys a lone komodo dragon hung behind a tree, his forked tongue flicking in and out, carrying scent inside to his olfactory sensors.\u00a0 He looked ornery and ready to act on it.\u00a0 Just beyond him otters slept next to each other, a couple belly up, legs splayed out, the picture of contentment.\u00a0 Gibbons swung on their impossibly long limbs from branch to branch, occasionally letting out their ear piercing and maniacal cry.\u00a0 Right next to them was a tree kangaroo.\u00a0 You&#8217;ve never heard of them?\u00a0 Neither had I, but there he was, up in the tree no less.<\/p>\n<p>On the Minnesota Trail the wolverines were active.\u00a0 They dug in a hole with great vigor, one pacing in the stream while the other worked, then shifting places.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth and Gabe loved\u00a0 the coral reef tank filled with all manner of fish in colors so exotic no painter could accurately depict them.\u00a0 They would be called slaves to bright colors if they did.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch we went on a mono-rail ride.\u00a0 That&#8217;s ok, a novelty, but better for the little ones than for me.<\/p>\n<p>Our last stop was the Grizzly Coast exhibit, a batch of animals native to the Kamchatka Peninsula.\u00a0 The grizzly bears captivate every one.\u00a0 One guy swam in the water, making a play for the salmon at the bottom of the pool, but not a\u00a0 very serious play.\u00a0 He had been fed earlier.\u00a0 Just keeping his reflexes sharp.<\/p>\n<p>We were there right at four hours which wore Grandpa out.\u00a0 Now a nap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summer\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Full Summer Moon Zoos have their detractors, but to this guy they stir a sense of wonder.\u00a0 Two star tortoises walked their sandy space at an elegant trot.\u00a0 Made me wonder what speed seems like to a tortoise.\u00a0 Were they flyin&#8217;?\u00a0 Hey, dude, slow down.\u00a0 Not sure, but when the tortoise in front slowed, &hellip;
