{"id":352,"date":"2008-02-26T21:31:01","date_gmt":"2008-02-27T03:31:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=352"},"modified":"2008-02-26T22:23:06","modified_gmt":"2008-02-27T04:23:06","slug":"junky-waves-not-clean-enough-to-surf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=352","title":{"rendered":"Junky Waves, Not Clean Enough to Surf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>4:45PM 75.\u00a0 Cloudy.\u00a0 Ocean breeze.\u00a0 Languid is the word.\u00a0 Da Fish Shack has a languid atmosphere right now; I feel enervated by the languidness of it all.\u00a0 Or something.<\/p>\n<p>Outta here around 11:30 AM headed for Hanalei.\u00a0 Traffic was good and I got to Hanalei about 20 minutes after I left.\u00a0 I ate lunch at the Hanalei Dolphin on the banks of the Hanalei River.\u00a0 Had opah, but it was not as good as Mama&#8217;s Fish House.\u00a0 Guess that&#8217;s to be expected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Drove through Hanalei to locate the farmer&#8217;s market again.\u00a0 Found it and drove on to find the Lumahuli gardens and check out the surfing.\u00a0 Found no surfing at Pinetrees or the Pavilion.\u00a0 Went on to\u00a0Black Pot\u00a0Bay.\u00a0 No surfers there either, but there was a lifeguard.<\/p>\n<p>He had hand printed a list of questions and answers.\u00a0 Where is Hanalei? 7 miles back down the road.\u00a0 Where is Ke&#8217;ee beach.\u00a0 Next beach down the road.\u00a0 Sort of a lifeguard FAQ.<\/p>\n<p>Not on his list was anything about surfing.\u00a0 I asked him why nobody was surfing.\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s junky.&#8221;\u00a0 Oh. &#8220;What does that mean?&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;It&#8217;s not clean.&#8221;\u00a0 Oh.\u00a0 Not a chatty sort.<\/p>\n<p>What I took from it was that the waves broke in several different places, there was no clean line for a surfer to catch.\u00a0 He suggested I look at Hanalei (Pinetrees and Pavilion).\u00a0 I said thanks and continued on looking for Lumahuli Gardens.\u00a0 Found it not too much further up the road.<\/p>\n<p>I drove in and went up to the visitor center.\u00a0 I wanted to buy a guide to the self-guided trip.\u00a0 The woman was reluctant to sell it to me.\u00a0 &#8220;We think it makes more sense if you see the plants as you read the guide.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;I see. Still, I want to read it before I go on the trail.&#8221;\u00a0 Still she hesitated. &#8220;I&#8217;m a gardner.\u00a0 I think I&#8217;ll get something from it.&#8221;\u00a0 She reached behind her.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 &#8220;You know you&#8217;ll still be charged $15 for the tour?&#8221;\u00a0 Yes, indeed, I did.\u00a0 That was more difficult than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>It was close to time for the Hanalei Farmer&#8217;s Market (which I had read about in the New York Times.) so I headed back toward Hanalei.\u00a0 When I arrived, at about 1:55,\u00a0 a line of cars waited to make a turn into the grassy parking lot.\u00a0 I was on the right side, so I parked.<\/p>\n<p>It looked like a county fair.\u00a0 There were several, maybe as many as 11, rows of cars parked 10-12 in a row.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd stood patiently, like good Minnesotans, behind a blue rope.\u00a0 Well, almost all were patient.\u00a0 An older with broad shoulders and a Maryland Football t-shirt walked up to the fence and in a gruff voice said, &#8220;Come on.&#8221;\u00a0 Nobody paid any attention. Promptly at 2 the rope came down and we went in as a group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As farmer&#8217;s markets in Minnesota go, it was small, but the choice of foods ranged from the ordinary to the exotic.\u00a0 There were wax beans, green beans, lettuce, flowers, rambutan, pineapple, avocado, banana&#8217;s, tangerines, oranges, more pineapples, more tangerines.\u00a0 One woman had a whole stand of tropical fruits, most of which I had never encountered:\u00a0lingons and a fruit I bought that she advertised as having a cinnamon taste.\u00a0 It does.\u00a0 But I\u00a0didn&#8217;t pay attention to the name.\u00a0 Just tried to find it.\u00a0 Couldn&#8217;t.\u00a0 It&#8217;s good and does have a cinnamony, custard type flavor.<\/p>\n<p>I bought those whatever they were and a pound of rambutans, lychee nuts\u00a0convered in a red skin with little soft spikes all over.\u00a0 Very cool.\u00a0 Discovered these at Mama&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>That was the day.\u00a0 After that I drove back to Da Fish Shack.\u00a0 Tried to take a nap, but it didn&#8217;t take, so I started this.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight?\u00a0 Who knows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>4:45PM 75.\u00a0 Cloudy.\u00a0 Ocean breeze.\u00a0 Languid is the word.\u00a0 Da Fish Shack has a languid atmosphere right now; I feel enervated by the languidness of it all.\u00a0 Or something.
