I want to say a word for the Hawai’ian night.\u00a0 Again.\u00a0 Clear.\u00a0 Black with\u00a0brilliant lights, the lights of the heavens.\u00a0 The Big Dipper that lit the way for the underground railroad.\u00a0 It pointed then and points now to Polaris.\u00a0 The North Star.\u00a0 I feel an affection for Polaris much like I feel for Orion.\u00a0 It has an identity and its identity and mine have grown together over the years.\u00a0 Hokusai, probably the best Ukiyo-e artist belonged to a Buddhist sect that worshipped the north star.\u00a0 I get it.<\/p>\n
While sky watching, the ocean never stops.\u00a0 Standing on old volcanic soil, listening to the waves and seeing the stars that helped the Polynesians navigate on their amazing voyage here.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They also used ocean currents and cloud formations.\u00a0\u00a0 A book I read yesterday compared their voyage to one headed off on\u00a0a journey to a distant planet.\u00a0 What would you take with\u00a0 you?\u00a0 They brought 27 species of plants:\u00a0 ti, taro, breadfruit and bananas among them.\u00a0 They call them canoe plants.<\/p>\n
