{"id":3942,"date":"2009-09-29T13:51:04","date_gmt":"2009-09-29T19:51:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=3942"},"modified":"2009-09-29T13:51:04","modified_gmt":"2009-09-29T19:51:04","slug":"fall-clean-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=3942","title":{"rendered":"Fall Clean-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fall\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Blood Moon<\/p>\n<p>Out in the garden this morning taking down plants that have finished their labors.\u00a0 Large cruciform vegetable plants grew from the seeds I started inside, but they never developed any fruits.\u00a0 They&#8217;re in the compost now.\u00a0 All the tomato vines save one have come down.\u00a0 The last tomato harvest went inside today, too.\u00a0 A few straggling yellow and orange tomatoes and a cluster of green tomatoes for a last fried green tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>A new crop of lettuce, beets and beans are well underway, lending an air of spring to the dying garden.\u00a0 While examining<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3943\" title=\"dieback091\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/dieback091-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"dieback091\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/dieback091-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/dieback091.jpg 670w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> carrots I have in the ground awaiting the frost, I discovered golden raspberries large as my thumb.\u00a0 A real treat at this late stage in the year.\u00a0 They await the vanilla ice cream I&#8217;m going to buy when I go to the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>The 49 degree weather made doing these choirs a pleasure.\u00a0 Odd as it may seem, I like the fall clean-up part of gardening as well as I do any other part, perhaps a little bit more.\u00a0 Most of these plants I started as seeds in February, March or April and they have matured under my care, borne their fruits and run through their life cycle.\u00a0 From some of them I have collected seeds to plant for next year.\u00a0 The clean up then represents a completion that goes one step beyond the harvest.\u00a0 It honors these living entities by caring for their spent forms in the most full way possible:\u00a0 helping them return their remaining nutrients back to the soil.\u00a0 I want no less for myself.<\/p>\n<p>Got a new toaster and a new ladder in the mail yesterday from Amazon.\u00a0 Boy, shopping has changed.\u00a0 I rarely go to a big box store anymore, once in a while to Best Buy to check out DVD&#8217;s or for some computer accessory.\u00a0 I still go to hardware stores and grocery stores, the things you need weekly or right now or fresh, but everything else I buy online.<\/p>\n<p>The bee guy, Mark Nordeen, had to cancel again today.\u00a0 His wife, Kate&#8217;s colleague, got kicked in the head by her brand new black mare.\u00a0 E.R. and a concussion later she&#8217;s home off work.\u00a0 Guess I&#8217;m gonna have to figure out how to over winter my bees all by myself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fall\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Blood Moon Out in the garden this morning taking down plants that have finished their labors.\u00a0 Large cruciform vegetable plants grew from the seeds I started inside, but they never developed any fruits.\u00a0 They&#8217;re in the compost now.\u00a0 All the tomato vines save one have come down.\u00a0 The last tomato harvest went inside &hellip;
