{"id":4249,"date":"2009-10-28T21:49:28","date_gmt":"2009-10-29T03:49:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=4249"},"modified":"2009-10-28T21:49:28","modified_gmt":"2009-10-29T03:49:28","slug":"litter-mates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=4249","title":{"rendered":"Litter Mates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fall\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Dark Moon<\/p>\n<p>A word about litter mates.\u00a0 Kate and I buy litter mates when we get puppies.\u00a0  Once in a while we&#8217;ve gotten adult dogs given to us by a breeder and we did buy one solitary wolfhound, but otherwise litter mates.\u00a0 Of our current pack all of the dogs were litter mates.\u00a0 Hilo and Kona were born 8 years ago from a champion whippet bitch.\u00a0 Emma and Bridgit (now deceased) we bought 14 years ago from a woman who was line breeding for really fast whippets.\u00a0 They were both crazy, but they loved each other.<\/p>\n<p>Rigel and Vega don&#8217;t look like litter mates.\u00a0 Rigel looks like a miniature Irish Wolfhound (miniature at 100 pounds, of <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4250\" title=\"vegarigel400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/vegarigel400-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"vegarigel400\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/vegarigel400-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/vegarigel400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>course) and Vega looks like, well, Vega.\u00a0 She&#8217;s a giant coon hound with a huge head and a lot of muscle.\u00a0 Appearances in this case deceive.\u00a0 These girls have been together since last December when they were born.<\/p>\n<p>Litter mates have mutual space.\u00a0 They lie on each other, eat each other&#8217;s food, play together.\u00a0 They retain the bond you might expect from animals who shared a womb, then a mother&#8217;s breasts.\u00a0 The intimacy and trust they display toward each other is so sweet, so innocent and enduring.\u00a0 We buy them just for this reason, so they will have a partner through life, one they can count on, one their own size in the case of Rigel and Vega.<\/p>\n<p>These relationships have been part of the magic for Kate and me over the years, an addition to the joy of knowing animals as friends and companions, we also know them as sisters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fall\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Dark Moon A word about litter mates.\u00a0 Kate and I buy litter mates when we get puppies.\u00a0 Once in a while we&#8217;ve gotten adult dogs given to us by a breeder and we did buy one solitary wolfhound, but otherwise litter mates.\u00a0 Of our current pack all of the dogs were litter mates.\u00a0 &hellip;
