The first snowfall is still magical to me, after all these years. Snow is gentle, quiet, transformative. Its return ushers in the fallow season, the time of holidays, of holiseason. The forests become different places, too. Streams will run under ice. Tree branches will have loads of snow ready to drop on unwary hikers.
