It happens to each of us from time to time.\u00a0 A slap in the face, either gentle or harsh, that says you’re getting old.\u00a0 Jane West, my opthamologist, whom I consider a friend, gave me one today.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“You have a slight cataract.”<\/p>\n
“Oh.”<\/p>\n
“Yes, I’ve been drawing it for several visits.\u00a0 It’s not significant.\u00a0 It’s a normal\u00a060 years old cataract.”<\/p>\n
“Oh.”\u00a0 Not knowing there was such a thing.\u00a0 And I had one.<\/p>\n
“Will it progress?”<\/p>\n
“Yes.\u00a0 But how fast depends on so many things.\u00a0\u00a0 General health. (good)\u00a0 Diet, especially anti-oxidants. (I start my day with at least 3\/4 cup of blueberries in my oatmeal.)\u00a0 Diabetes. (nope) Family propensity. (Don’t think so.)\u00a0 So, it’s nothing to worry about.”<\/p>\n
I believe her.\u00a0 She’s always been straight with me, a quality I prefer.\u00a0 Still, a normal 60 year olds cataract?\u00a0 I’ve never wanted to be normal and definitely not in age-related phenomena.\u00a0 I want to be age-defying, younger than my years, in really good shape for a guy…with the usual cataracts.\u00a0 Sigh.\u00a0 I know these are forlorn\u00a0and at one level even harmful hopes.\u00a0 In these matters I prefer a large dose of contradiction.\u00a0 I wish to be younger than my years, yet aging gracefully.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
