Just finished watching Cloverfield.\u00a0 This was a clever take on the horror flick.\u00a0 It used Blair Witch hand-held camera and concealment with high production values off in the distance.\u00a0 The affect is a sense of immediacy and immersion in the experience.\u00a0 In this case we don’t know much about the monster, in fact nothing outside its destructiveness at first.\u00a0 If we\u00a0didn’t know we were watching a horror movie, we might think that New York had experienced a multiplied terrorist attack on the scale of many 9\/11’s.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The monster convinces because it’s alien in form, though it most closely resembles a bat with a long tail and ferocious teeth.\u00a0 It also convinces because\u00a0we see it from a distance and are most aware of its presence as the army races believably into action against it.\u00a0 Unlike most monster movies where the army seems\u00a0called into shoot guns because that’s what we know how to do,\u00a0in this instance it appears desparate, almost hopeless.\u00a0 This makes it seem real.<\/p>\n
Matt Reeves, the director, wanted to give America a monster as iconic as Godzilla is to the Japanese.\u00a0 I don’t think\u00a0he succeeded on that\u00a0score.\u00a0 Besides, we have King Kong.\u00a0 Who is more iconic than that giant gorilla?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
