{"id":5811,"date":"2010-03-26T17:19:09","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T23:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=5811"},"modified":"2016-05-16T09:03:41","modified_gmt":"2016-05-16T15:03:41","slug":"why-is-this-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=5811","title":{"rendered":"Why Is This Art?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spring\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Awakening Moon<\/p>\n<p>Two interesting tours with third graders this morning.\u00a0 In the first tour two different kids asked why is this art questions?\u00a0 One wanted to know why the George Morrison was art and the other wanted to know why a piece in the modern gallery, one with parallel lines on a white background qualified as art.\u00a0 We had significant discussions on both pieces.\u00a0 On the first we discussed Morrison&#8217;s fascination with horizon lines.\u00a0 Could they see the horizon line?\u00a0 Could they imagine a beach?\u00a0 Yes?\u00a0 Well, that can make it art.\u00a0 On the second piece we had a long discussion about blank canvas and a canvas with parallel lines.\u00a0 One boy offered that it looked like notebook paper.\u00a0 I mentioned parallel lines.\u00a0 Had they studied them?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Do parallel lines ever meet?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Might have something to do with this piece.<\/p>\n<p>On both tours I took them to foot-in-the-door and suggested they might start thinking now about entering in 2020.\u00a0 Plenty of time to prepare.\u00a0 They found many things that interested them.\u00a0 On the second tour when I told them Frank had only two tablespoons of ink on the\u00a0 whole canvas, Annie, a small girl, said, &#8220;Yeah.
