{"id":6165,"date":"2010-04-29T13:29:54","date_gmt":"2010-04-29T19:29:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=6165"},"modified":"2016-05-16T08:42:31","modified_gmt":"2016-05-16T14:42:31","slug":"queens-vegetables-and-latin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=6165","title":{"rendered":"Queens, Vegetables and Latin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spring\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Full Flower Moon<\/p>\n<p>Under the full flower moon I inspected my new colony of bees.\u00a0 In this instance I checked the frames for larvae.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t tell if they were there or not.\u00a0 This is important because it indicates the presence or absence of a laying queen.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll check again on Saturday.\u00a0 The queen excluder went into the overwintered colony.\u00a0 The queen excluder prevents her from moving either up or down in this instance.<\/p>\n<p>On the weekend when I try my first division, I&#8217;ll take the hive box with no new larvae (the queen is not there since it takes larvae four days to appear) and put it on a new hive stand and bottom board.\u00a0 Then, I&#8217;ll slow release a new queen.\u00a0 That is, I&#8217;ll put a mini-marshmallow in the end of her cage, suspend the cage between the two central frames and let the queen eat her way out or the worker bees eat their way into her.\u00a0 This makes her acceptance more likely.<\/p>\n<p>One undignified note.\u00a0 A bee crawled up my pants leg and stung me on my butt.\u00a0 Boy did I howl.\u00a0 Jumped around.\u00a0 OUCH.<\/p>\n<p>After the bees I spent time in the garden planting dill, basil, marigolds, radicchio, foxglove, spinach, swiss chard, kale, golden and red beets.\u00a0 A few more bags of composted manure went onto the raised beds, too.<\/p>\n<p>The garden worked preceded a session with my Latin tutor.\u00a0 He&#8217;s good, supportive but demanding.\u00a0 I like that.\u00a0 This was not my best week.\u00a0 I did this work a couple of weeks ago and had not gone over it again, so I sounded somewhat like the village idiot.\u00a0 Being a good student is important to me, so I promised Greg I would do better next week.\u00a0 He said, &#8220;Be a good boy, you mean?&#8221;\u00a0 Yes, that&#8217;s exactly what I meant.\u00a0 Geez.\u00a0 Even at 63.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spring\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Full Flower Moon Under the full flower moon I inspected my new colony of bees.\u00a0 In this instance I checked the frames for larvae.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t tell if they were there or not.\u00a0 This is important because it indicates the presence or absence of a laying queen.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll check again on Saturday.\u00a0 The queen &hellip;
