Better Eating, Better Seeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beltane\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Planting Moon<\/p>\n<p>Got some plants in the mail.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t start anything from seed this last winter after starting way too many the season before.\u00a0 Maybe this winter I&#8217;ll hit a happy medium.\u00a0 These are heirloom plants, so I can save the seeds and plant them next year.\u00a0 Would somebody remind me to do that when fall comes around?<\/p>\n<p>The flower garden has gotten the short end of the stick this spring and it shows.\u00a0 Weeds and grass in places where there should be neither.\u00a0 While Kate&#8217;s away, I plan to get some work done on the flowers since the vegetable garden will be planted, irrigation problems are largely resolved and I signed out of the Museum for the two Fridays she&#8217;s gone.<\/p>\n<p>We do have a lot of things growing.\u00a0 The leeks have jumped up as have the sugar snap peas, beets, onions, fennel, mustard greens, garlic, parsnip, strawberries, apples, pears, cherries, currants, quince and blueberries.\u00a0 The radicchio, thyme, dill, rosemary,\u00a0 flat parsley and lavender are also off to a good start.\u00a0 The potatoes are, as they say, in the trenches and we await their emergence.\u00a0 The whole fruit group is still relatively new to us since the orchard is in its third growing season, but only beginning to actually bear fruit.\u00a0 A lot of critters have evolved that love fruit:\u00a0 insects, fungi, birds.\u00a0 Just how much predation we can expect is still unknown.<\/p>\n<p>I got an e-mail back from Gary Reuter at the U about the comb I photographed.\u00a0 &#8220;The bees,&#8221; he said, &#8220;are making extra comb.\u00a0 Take it off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The red car went in for its 260,000 mile check up today.\u00a0 It&#8217;s in fine shapes with the exception of a little bit baling wire and bubble gum necessary for the next 100,000 miles.\u00a0\u00a0 Toyota dealerships are not intrinsically happy places right now, but they&#8217;ve always done well by us and I appreciate them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beltane\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Planting Moon Got some plants in the mail.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t start anything from seed this last winter after starting way too many the season before.\u00a0 Maybe this winter I&#8217;ll hit a happy medium.\u00a0 These are heirloom plants, so I can save the seeds and plant them next year.\u00a0 Would somebody remind me to &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=6379\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Heirlooms.
