{"id":6829,"date":"2010-06-23T15:28:11","date_gmt":"2010-06-23T21:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=6829"},"modified":"2010-06-25T16:03:38","modified_gmt":"2010-06-25T22:03:38","slug":"holes-in-the-fabric","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=6829","title":{"rendered":"Holes in the Fabric"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Summer\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Strawberry Moon<\/p>\n<p>It seems the gods of fate have not left our pack just yet.\u00a0 Today was the annual physical for all of our dogs, a process that begins with luring Vega and Rigel into the back of the truck.\u00a0 Hilo and Kona just jump up into the front seat.\u00a0 That all went fine.\u00a0 Kona and Rigel were a bit nervous, panting and walking around in the exam room at Foley Blvd. Animal Clinic.\u00a0 Hilo sat on my lap and Vega, still a bit dopey from the stings, I think, laid on the floor as if she lived there.\u00a0 Or, as if, as Kate suggested, she hoped she was invisible.<\/p>\n<p>The exam went well enough.\u00a0 Vega came in at 115 lbs and Rigel at an even 100.\u00a0 Kona had gained half a pound and Hilo had lost a pound and a half.\u00a0 During the results, Dr. Roger Barr, a friend now after 16 years of Irish Wolfhounds and Whippets, said he would, &#8220;save Hilo for the last.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Our littlest girl and the dog most devoted to me has some form of kidney disease.\u00a0 Roger says within two months or so she should start to show symptoms as her kidney functions slowly shut down.\u00a0 There&#8217;s not much to be done about it.\u00a0 A round of antibiotics could, but probably won&#8217;t, knock out a pyelonephritis, if it&#8217;s there.\u00a0 If it is an infection, then her kidney function tests will return to normal.\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible, but not likely.<\/p>\n<p>Hilo is 9, so she&#8217;s not a young dog, but Emma was 14 when she died a couple of weeks ago.\u00a0 Hilo&#8217;s not gone yet, we have some time with her, in some senses as we always have, but now with a knowledge that those times are nearing an end.<\/p>\n<p>Each dog is different and special.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6830\" title=\"hilo600\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/hilo600-300x255.jpg\" alt=\"hilo600\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/hilo600-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/hilo600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> When they die, a unique aspect of our life here comes to a finish.\u00a0 It is the unique and the special traits or memories we recall when we speak of them in later years.\u00a0\u00a0 Celt&#8217;s stepping on my snow shoes, barking at the flapping black plastic bag, receiving attention at the St. Kate&#8217;s Art Fair as if it were his due.\u00a0 Buck&#8217;s careful positioning of the pillows and blankets so he could lie down on the perfect spot.\u00a0 Iris retrieving and shredding tissues.\u00a0 Emma standing on the tree.<\/p>\n<p>But in the immediate aftermath of a death it is the hole in the fabric of our life that tears the heart.\u00a0 We were seven and now we are six.\u00a0 Soon, if Roger Barr is right, we will be five.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Summer\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Strawberry Moon It seems the gods of fate have not left our pack just yet.\u00a0 Today was the annual physical for all of our dogs, a process that begins with luring Vega and Rigel into the back of the truck.\u00a0 Hilo and Kona just jump up into the front seat.\u00a0 That all went &hellip;
