{"id":828,"date":"2008-07-22T17:12:26","date_gmt":"2008-07-22T23:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=828"},"modified":"2008-07-22T17:12:26","modified_gmt":"2008-07-22T23:12:26","slug":"steamed-dumplings-stuffed-with-yak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=828","title":{"rendered":"Steamed Dumplings Stuffed With Yak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>78\u00a0 bar steady\u00a0 30.03\u00a0 0mph ENE dew-point 56\u00a0 Summer, warm and sunny<\/p>\n<p>Waning Gibbous Thunder Moon<\/p>\n<p>A trifecta.\u00a0 In to Minnehaha.\u00a0 Back to Andover.\u00a0 In to Kenwood.\u00a0 Back to Andover.\u00a0 In to Sierra Club and the MIA.\u00a0 Back to Andover.\u00a0 Geez.\u00a0 As I said, I gotta check with my scheduler.<\/p>\n<p>Katarina is an intern from east Germany, Jena.\u00a0 We folded letters and surveys to candidates for Minnesota House races.\u00a0 She&#8217;s a bright young lady whose lucky boyfriend lives here.\u00a0 They both study political science and enjoy comparing US and German culture\/society.\u00a0 She gave the example of her parents:\u00a0 &#8220;They have never worried.\u00a0 They have no debt.\u00a0 They live modestly.&#8221;\u00a0 She said her mother was not allowed to finish high school in the old East German regime because her husband was a mathematics professor.\u00a0 If you had an intellengentsia in the home, you also had to have a proletarian.\u00a0 Odd logic, even for Marxists.<\/p>\n<p>After doing the mailing, I called about half a list of candidates who received the survey by e-mail last Friday.\u00a0 This was just a reminder call.\u00a0 Margaret Levin cajoled me into making phone calls and I&#8217;m glad she did.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t so bad.\u00a0 Of course, these were all friendly folk, too.<\/p>\n<p>Across the street from the Sierra Club is the Himalaya, a Nepalese restaurant.\u00a0 It was noon, so I stopped in for steamed dumplings stuffed with yak and a tasty sauce.\u00a0 The next course was a soup with potatoes, black-eyed peas and bamboo shoots.\u00a0 Nan accompanied this dish.\u00a0 Hmmm.\u00a0 I enjoy finding these small ethnic places and sampling cuisine from countries I have not visited.\u00a0 Food is one of the fastest ways into a culture, even faster, because more immediate, than language.<\/p>\n<p>I discussed purchasing a Nepalese thangka with the owner.\u00a0 When I said I would like a Yamatanka, he said, &#8220;Oh, you like Yama?&#8221; He stuck his tongue out and down, Yama&#8217;s typical presentation. &#8220;Yes,&#8221; I said.\u00a0 &#8220;Scary.&#8221;\u00a0 I&#8217;ll speak with him about it again when I go in to the Sierra Club political committee meeting next Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Before I went to the Sierra Club, I stopped at the Northern Clay Center and picked up a small plate.\u00a0 It is my intention, over the next few years, to replace our Portmerion with unmatched pieces from many potters.\u00a0 This is the fifth or sixth acquistion so far.<\/p>\n<p>Each quarter I define a retreat.\u00a0 It can be brief, three days or so, and it can be long, like the stay in Hawai&#8217;i.\u00a0 I find I need to punctuate my normal routine with these caesuras or I get stale.\u00a0 This habit began when I was in the ministry and I&#8217;ve found it a good carry over, so I&#8217;ve continued it.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s my retreat for the fall quarter:<\/p>\n<p>7\/22\/08\u00a0\u00a0 No traveling for this retreat.\u00a0 I will take two weeks and stop writing, stop using the internet (except for the blog and e-mail) and study books on novel craft.\u00a0 In this retreat I will create a reading program and a writing program that will guide my work for the next ten years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>78\u00a0 bar steady\u00a0 30.03\u00a0 0mph ENE dew-point 56\u00a0 Summer, warm and sunny Waning Gibbous Thunder Moon A trifecta.\u00a0 In to Minnehaha.\u00a0 Back to Andover.\u00a0 In to Kenwood.\u00a0 Back to Andover.\u00a0 In to Sierra Club and the MIA.\u00a0 Back to Andover.\u00a0 Geez.\u00a0 As I said, I gotta check with my scheduler.
