{"id":830,"date":"2008-07-23T08:16:37","date_gmt":"2008-07-23T14:16:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=830"},"modified":"2008-07-23T08:16:37","modified_gmt":"2008-07-23T14:16:37","slug":"belt-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=830","title":{"rendered":"Belt Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>69\u00a0 bar steady 30.10\u00a0 0mph\u00a0 E\u00a0 dew-point 58\u00a0\u00a0 Sunrise 8:58\u00a0 Sunset 7:23\u00a0\u00a0 Summer<\/p>\n<p>Waning Gibbous Thunder Moon<\/p>\n<p>Follow up on the yak dumplings.\u00a0 More and more my mouth likes things against which my lower digestive system rebels.\u00a0 Yak meat roiled my stomach.\u00a0 A familiar feeling these days, days in which I have fallen far from the grace of the nutrisystem weight loss this winter and subsequently have created various insults to my stomach and intestines:\u00a0 fatty food, not enough fiber, too much food.\u00a0 Like that.\u00a0 Makes me feel yucky.<\/p>\n<p>As I said yesterday, I don&#8217;t like victim status, but I am increasingly aware that my body is the victim of internecine warfare in my mind.\u00a0 One part of me, the earthy bodily part, sends a sensation signal to the brain, &#8220;Boy, wouldn&#8217;t X be good right now?&#8221;\u00a0 Another part of me, sometimes the Superego\/father and sometimes Healthy Man, says, &#8220;No.\u00a0 Not right now.\u00a0 Too much.\u00a0 Bad for the heart, blood vessels, stomach wall.\u00a0 No.&#8221;\u00a0 Then, too often, earthy body picks itself up and goes to the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p>I experience this, sometimes, as an actual dialogue in which one part of my mind shushes the other.\u00a0 My hunch is that consistent eating habits lie in empowering the Healthy Man, but I need to figure out how to do that.\u00a0 This feels like an old struggle to me, one I have played out in relation to alcohol and tobacco, but girding my loins for battle has, so far, not proved powerful enough against my appetites.\u00a0 What is girding the loins anyhow?\u00a0 What is a gird?<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0 Princeton Word Net,\u00a0 gird is to put on arms or to put on a girdle. \u00a0 Girdle meant, one source says, belt originally. OK.\u00a0 So I put my belt on do battle with weight.
