{"id":8659,"date":"2010-12-07T20:27:35","date_gmt":"2010-12-08T02:27:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=8659"},"modified":"2016-05-15T10:38:35","modified_gmt":"2016-05-15T16:38:35","slug":"more-tales-from-the-art-crypt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=8659","title":{"rendered":"More Tales From the Art Crypt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Samhain\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Moon of the Winter Solstice<\/p>\n<p>Fire extinguisher training.\u00a0 All guards and registrar personnel get trained in the use of fire extinguishers.\u00a0 Ken reports this is a lot of fun.\u00a0 &#8220;They put pans of fire all over the room and you have to practice figuring out how to put them out.&#8221;\u00a0 Waving a hand like a fire extinguisher, he went on, &#8220;See.\u00a0 A double layered fire, you have to go up and down, starting at the bottom and moving across it.&#8221;\u00a0 Imagine a spirited faux demonstration.\u00a0 Then, one day there was a real fire.\u00a0 &#8220;A contractor (notice who the bad guys are here) was smoking in the building.\u00a0 Not supposed to.&#8221;\u00a0 Wags finger. &#8220;Throws his cigarette in a wastebasket with&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0 Wait for it.\u00a0 &#8220;Sawdust in it and a fire started.&#8221;\u00a0 His eyes light up, &#8220;We all jumped for it and Steve won.\u00a0 He put it out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On a more serious note, Ken monitors scholars who want to use objects in our collection for research.\u00a0 A recent example is a gentlemen who specializes in the study of Chinese Imperial silks, especially Imperial robes.\u00a0 He used our collection to observe and make notes about the Chinese tendency to alter robes to fit new Imperial court members, rather than disposing of the old ones and making new.\u00a0 One of our robe&#8217;s has, he pointed out, a Song dynasty fabric sewn in as part of alterations to its sleeves.\u00a0 When robes would become too deteriorated to use, still usable sections would be cut out for use at a later time.<\/p>\n<p>In enameled cabinets with glass windows in them, Ken opened one and pulled out a drawer.\u00a0 It had a full silver setting, made by Tiffany, with hammered grips and small Japanese objects: pumpkins, turtles, grass affixed near the grip&#8217;s end.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not a big silver service guy, but seeing this made me want to own one.\u00a0 Just like that one.<\/p>\n<p>The drawer below the Tiffany set, which held the serving utensils, there were spiral cuff-links and a tie tack made Alexander Calder.\u00a0 Along side them were a pair of old eye glasses, some snips and other assorted oddments that might have rested on a table at Grandma&#8217;s garage sale.\u00a0 Except these were really, really nice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Samhain\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Moon of the Winter Solstice Fire extinguisher training.\u00a0 All guards and registrar personnel get trained in the use of fire extinguishers.\u00a0 Ken reports this is a lot of fun.\u00a0 &#8220;They put pans of fire all over the room and you have to practice figuring out how to put them out.&#8221;\u00a0 Waving a hand &hellip;
