{"id":9311,"date":"2011-02-03T12:34:11","date_gmt":"2011-02-03T18:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=9311"},"modified":"2016-05-14T16:26:28","modified_gmt":"2016-05-14T22:26:28","slug":"on-weight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=9311","title":{"rendered":"On Weight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imbolc\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 New (Bridgit) Moon<\/p>\n<p>While at the Northern Clay Center yesterday, I had a conversation about weight loss.\u00a0 Weight loss can prove difficult for those of us in recovery since we often replace alcohol with calories.\u00a0 The obsessive nature of the alcoholic personality tends to keep us coming back for more, of no matter what.\u00a0 If we can&#8217;t have beer, we can at least have the weinerschnitzel.\u00a0 Many Americans, not only those in recovery, struggle with weight gain.<\/p>\n<p>My own weight gain crept up on me over a period of years until I was ten to fifteen pounds overweight.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve tried weight-watchers, nutri-system, exercise all to no avail, at least eventually, though I lost weight with the first two each time I tried them.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, only a couple of weeks before the new national guidelines hit the newspapers, I decided to finally make up my own approach.\u00a0 Eat half of what I would ordinarily.\u00a0 Add fruits and vegetables to each meal.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t eat in front of the TV.\u00a0 That&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p>The key to my approach is, I think, that it is my approach.\u00a0 I identified three troublesome areas:\u00a0 too much on my plate each meal, inadequate fruit and vegetables during the non-growing season months and mindless eating while I watched mindless TV.\u00a0 I figured I could make these modification without feeling deprived and without giving up my favorite foods.\u00a0 So far, so good.\u00a0 I&#8217;m back in my old pants, using my old belts.\u00a0 My energy level is up and the amount of work I can do on the treadmill has advanced impressively for me.<\/p>\n<p>So, if my example amounts to anything, it&#8217;s this:\u00a0 identify some dietary problem areas.\u00a0 Decide on simple, manageable solutions.\u00a0 Apply them consistently.\u00a0 Most of all, be kind to yourself.\u00a0 We all die of something.\u00a0 We all have times when we look great and when we look terrible.\u00a0 Befriend the part of you that wants to get real about weight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imbolc\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 New (Bridgit) Moon While at the Northern Clay Center yesterday, I had a conversation about weight loss.\u00a0 Weight loss can prove difficult for those of us in recovery since we often replace alcohol with calories.\u00a0 The obsessive nature of the alcoholic personality tends to keep us coming back for more, of no matter what.\u00a0 &hellip;
