{"id":9586,"date":"2011-03-03T18:25:30","date_gmt":"2011-03-04T00:25:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=9586"},"modified":"2011-03-03T21:35:22","modified_gmt":"2011-03-04T03:35:22","slug":"silenced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=9586","title":{"rendered":"Silenced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imbolc\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waning Bridgit Moon<\/p>\n<p>Today I took my nap at 10 am.\u00a0 Slept for an hour.\u00a0 Felt refreshed the rest of the day.\u00a0 Strange.<\/p>\n<p>At around 2 pm I grew stale in my writing so I went downstairs, strapped on my snowshoes and went for another aerobic adventure on the grounds here.\u00a0 The Abbey has two lakes, though I saw only one, the one on which the agnosic psychiatrist lives.\u00a0 She suffers from an inability to remember faces.<\/p>\n<p>She told Father Tom that if she met in the mall in Sioux City, she wouldn&#8217;t recognize him until he spoke.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure how long she&#8217;s been here, but it&#8217;s a while.\u00a0 She lives here as a hermit in a small house provided by the Abbey.<\/p>\n<p>Father Tom and I ate lunch together and he mused about women being &#8220;more relational.&#8221;\u00a0 He quickly added that might be a bit of a generalization, but buttressed his point with a story about the every third meeting between Benedictine Abbots and Prioresses.<\/p>\n<p>As a former Abbot, Father Tom, a short man with wiry white hair and an athlete&#8217;s nervous energy, was among the Abbots when they decided to begin meeting with the Prioresses.\u00a0 The Prioresses, he said, wanted to meet every year, but the men said, &#8220;Noooo.\u00a0 Every three years is plenty.&#8221;\u00a0 Even on the third year, Father Tom went on, the Prioresses show up a day or two early and leave a day or two after the men.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m beginning to like the silence that really begins at supper at extends through breakfast.\u00a0 It gives a time for renewal, meditation, contemplation or relaxation.\u00a0 Woolly Bill Schmidt sent an e-mail suggesting that the reason for the silence might be found in these closing lines from Yogananda:<\/p>\n<p>You can wander through the universe incognito;<br \/>\nYou can make vassals of the gods;<br \/>\nYou can be ever youthful;<br \/>\nYou can walk on water and live in fire;<br \/>\nBut control of the mind is better and more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>As for me, I think it may be way to calm disputatious monks.\u00a0 Like me, if I were a monk.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imbolc\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waning Bridgit Moon Today I took my nap at 10 am.\u00a0 Slept for an hour.\u00a0 Felt refreshed the rest of the day.\u00a0 Strange.
