{"id":9923,"date":"2011-04-04T19:35:20","date_gmt":"2011-04-05T01:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=9923"},"modified":"2016-05-14T12:07:19","modified_gmt":"2016-05-14T18:07:19","slug":"over-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=9923","title":{"rendered":"Over There"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spring\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Bee Hiving Moon<\/p>\n<p>Libya.\u00a0 The Middle East in an arc of protest.\u00a0 We have intervened on behalf of Libyan rebels and I&#8217;m pretty sure my boy is over there, directing bombardments.\u00a0 I say pretty sure because he was secretive when he told me about this deployment.\u00a0 Wherever he is, he&#8217;s flying 20 hour missions day after day, work that tires him out and energizes him at the same time.\u00a0 Thanks to e-mail, though I don&#8217;t know where he is, I can communicate with him easily.\u00a0 Strange.<\/p>\n<p>In this instance and in the case of Afghanistan I view our military presence as justified, in the Libyan case because of opposition to genocide and in the Afghan case because the Taliban have provided and would provide again, safe haven for an implacable and dangerous enemy of our country.\u00a0 Do I like it?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Military force is terrible, only less terrible in fact, than not having it available when needed.<\/p>\n<p>Just for completeness, I did not believe in the war in Iraq and found\/find it a much closer analog to Vietnam.\u00a0 We went in without being asked on a mission only we identified to save people who did not want to be saved.\u00a0 All in all, a fiasco made much, much worse by civilian casualties.\u00a0 Not our fight.<\/p>\n<p>The nuclear crisis in Japan, still difficult to assess from afar, shows improvement in that some of the plants now have functioning electricity, yet signs of worsening as an admitted crack in a container vessel resists plugging.\u00a0 My friend Bill Schmidt wants the media to turn its face more toward the tsunami\/earthquake victims and there is clear sentiment in Japan that agrees with him.<\/p>\n<p>I would say we need to look at both.\u00a0 The human cost already incurred needs and will need attention for some time.\u00a0 The nuclear crisis, which has the potential to spread out and affect more people over a longer period of time, has implications not only for the current disaster, but for other nuclear plants in other locations, whether they suffer from the same vulnerabilities as Fukushima or different ones.<\/p>\n<p>And, in the weirder news of the day, two odd stories from the LA Times, rapidly becoming one of my favorite news sources.<\/p>\n<p>Classify under not particularly surprising:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"entry-header\">Classical music still effective at dispersing loitering teens:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/culturemonster\/2011\/04\/classical-music-still-works-at-dispersing-loitering-teens-.html\">LA Times<\/a><\/h3>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-climate-berkeley-20110404,0,772697.story\">Critics&#8217; review<\/a> unexpectedly supports scientific consensus on global warming<\/h3>\n<p>A team of <a id=\"OREDU00000197\" class=\"taxInlineTagLink\" title=\"University of California, Berkeley\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/education\/colleges-universities\/university-of-california-berkeley-OREDU00000197.topic\">UC Berkeley<\/a> physicists and statisticians that set out to challenge the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.climate.gov\/\">scientific consensus<\/a> on global warming is finding that its data-crunching effort is producing results nearly identical to those underlying the prevailing view.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/berkeleyearth.org\/\">Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project<\/a> was launched by physics professor Richard Muller, a longtime critic of government-led climate studies, to address what he called &#8220;the legitimate concerns&#8221; of skeptics who believe that global warming is exaggerated.<\/p>\n<p>But Muller unexpectedly told a congressional hearing last week that the work of the three principal groups that have analyzed the temperature trends underlying climate science is &#8220;excellent&#8230;. We see a global warming trend that is very similar to that previously reported by the other groups.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Berkeley project&#8217;s biggest private backer, at $150,000, is the <a id=\"PEBSL00421\" class=\"taxInlineTagLink\" title=\"Charles Koch\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/economy-business-finance\/charles-koch-PEBSL00421.topic\">Charles G.
