{"id":9932,"date":"2011-04-05T09:13:36","date_gmt":"2011-04-05T15:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=9932"},"modified":"2011-04-05T10:19:07","modified_gmt":"2011-04-05T16:19:07","slug":"ai-weiwei-in-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ancientrails.com\/?p=9932","title":{"rendered":"Ai Weiwei In Jail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spring\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Waxing Bee Hiving Moon<\/p>\n<p>In all the tsunami\/earthquake, nuclear crisis, air strikes in Libya, brother coming, dog biting haze I missed this story about Ai Weiwei, a Chinese dissident artist whose marble chair is in our Wu Family Reception Hall.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve attached a summary from the Financial Times and a video interview with Dan Rather (see above).\u00a0 Especially in the Rather interview I can see the problem he poses for an autocratic regime.\u00a0 He gets the notion of freedom, of individuality, of free expression.\u00a0 That&#8217;s frightening stuff to autocrats.<\/p>\n<p>As a man who admires Chinese civilization, its arts, its literature, its inventiveness, its long, long history, I know China and Chinese civilization has room for Ai Weiwei and his kind.\u00a0 Wandering Taoist sages, eccentrics all, the mountain poets, literati painters are just the ones who come to mind right now.<\/p>\n<p>The more I read Chinese literature and history I do know that they inflect the dialectic rebel\/government in a way not easily understood by Americans.\u00a0 That is, the rebel is bad and the government good.\u00a0 Or mostly, anyhow.\u00a0 This has to do in part with the notion of the mandate of heaven.\u00a0 As long as the government achieves order, the people are fed and happy, then the government reflects the will of heaven.\u00a0 But, if the people are starving, crime and violence becomes rampant&#8211;see the Warring States period and the end of the Han Dynasty as examples&#8211;the government has lost the mandate of heaven and must be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>I have also added a TED video (above) about China, one that defines it as a civilization-state rather than nation-state and speculates on the impact of China&#8217;s rise.\u00a0 I think the idea is germane to this topic.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.\u00a0 I&#8217;m thinking about how to impact this man&#8217;s detention in a positive way.\u00a0 If you have any ideas, let me know.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ft-story-header\">\n<h1>Fears grow for Ai Weiwei\u2019s safety<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/c7120206-5f8c-11e0-bd1b-00144feab49a.html?ftcamp=rss\">By Jamil Anderlini in Beijing <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Published: April 5 2011 15:22 | Last updated: April 5 2011 15:22<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\"><!--\nfunction floatContent(){var paraNum = \"3\"\nparaNum = paraNum - 1;var tb = document.getElementById('floating-con');var nl = document.getElementById('floating-target');if(tb.getElementsByTagName(\"div\").length&gt; 0){if (nl.getElementsByTagName(\"p\").length&gt;= paraNum){nl.insertBefore(tb,nl.getElementsByTagName(\"p\")[paraNum]);}else {if (nl.getElementsByTagName(\"p\").length == 3){nl.insertBefore(tb,nl.getElementsByTagName(\"p\")[2]);}else {nl.insertBefore(tb,nl.getElementsByTagName(\"p\")[0]);}}}}\n\/\/ --><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Fears  for the safety of China\u2019s most famous artist are growing amid  international condemnation of his extralegal disappearance at the hands  of the country\u2019s increasingly repressive state security apparatus.<\/p>\n<p>Family members of Ai Weiwei, whose <a class=\"bodystrong\" title=\"FT - Seeds scattered in latest Tate installation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/e2e84e96-d584-11df-8e86-00144feabdc0.html\">\u201cSunflower Seeds\u201d installation<\/a> is currently on display in London\u2019s Tate Modern gallery, said on  Tuesday evening they still had no idea of his whereabouts after he was <a class=\"bodystrong\" title=\"FT - Chinese artist held at Beijing airport\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/c5884dfe-5e16-11e0-b1d8-00144feab49a.html\">detained at Beijing airport<\/a> on Sunday and led away by airport security.<\/p>\n<p>Friends,  family and associates have been warned not to speak to journalists and  Mr Ai\u2019s wife and eight employees were temporarily detained on Sunday  after police raided his Beijing home and studio.
