New Theme

Lughnasa                                              New Harvest Moon

Trying out a new website design.  May try out two or three more over the next three weeks.  I’m looking for something a little cleaner, new.  A change.

The graphic design course I took prompted me to think about this.  I’m not sure this is the direction I’ll go, but I want something different.

If you have an opinion, it’s welcome.

Latino Demographic Trends

The following quote comes from the Congressional Research Service, a March, 2011 report:

With the release of the results of the 2000 census, the growing role of Hispanics in the United States became apparent.  Numbering over 35 million at that time—and growing by more than 1.5 annually from both immigration and natural increase—Hispanics are now the nation’s largest minority.69 If current demographic trends continue, the population of Hispanic or Latino origin is projected to steadily increase as a percentage of the total U.S. population through 2050, rising from 12.6% in 2000 (or about one in seven persons) to 30.2% in 2050 (approaching one in every three persons) (see Figure 5).

Mark Odegard suggested I use images that were more personal.  Here’s what I found.  Still not satisfied.

Mini-Golf, Cruising South America, Driving Too Much

Mid-Summer                                                  Waxing Honey Flow Moon

Up at 7:15.  Worked out.  Grabbed breakfast.  Showered.  Drove to Big Stone Mini-Golf for a unique experience with two very experienced artists, at work in a large play ground for their ideas.

On the way back stopped into Minnetonka Travel in downtown Wayzata to finish paying for the cruise.  Wrote a big check.  Fussing with details like visas, changes to air transportation and setting up  a couple of nights in Rio took 2 full hours.

By that time there wasn’t enough flex in my schedule to drive back to Andover (in rush hour going the wrong way), then turn around and make it over to the Sierra Club by 6 pm for a meeting, so I drove into Minneapolis and had lunch/dinner at the Java Restaurant.

Just got back home.  Weary.  Tomorrow.

Independence Day

Mid-Summer                                                                                                         Waning Garlic Moon

July 4th.  Kate celebrates her independence from the hospital and from the hip pain she has endured for so many years.  Her recovery has settled into a familiar path and she looks to be back on her feet without aid sooner than you might think.  She’s already walking with the aid of a walker, getting herself out of and almost back in to bed.  And this is just three days post-op.  She’s tough and the procedure makes this early mobility possible; it’s great advantage.

Her color has improved to normal and she got good sleep last night.

The house loses a lot of its warmth and resonance without Kate here.  I’m looking forward to having her back.

A Northern Night

Beltane                                                                                      Full Last Frost Moon

The last legcom call of the session tonight.  I went into the Sierra Club office to make the call because I had to be in a meeting at 6 pm just down the block.  The legcom call is at 5pm.  Not enough time to make it into the city for a 6pm meeting.

I got a chili cheese dog (oh, I know…) and a blueberry smoothie at the Fast Freeze across the street from the Sierra Club offices.  Eating local.

The last meeting was interesting, but went over time.  I was glad when it ended.

I still had the drive back to Andover of course, but I have a new book on DVD, so I had a reward.  It’s a W.E.B. Griffith novel about the covert world.  He’s not very adroit at getting the backstory into the narrative, in essence he tells most of it rather than shows.  The real book starts somewhere well after the first few pages.

It was one of those northern nights when the modest heat of the day lingered atop the oncoming chill of the evening, a time when driving becomes mesmerizing, a trip back in time.  Nights spent cruising drive-ins, looking for girls.  Nights driving past the acres and acres of corn that grew in the fields that surrounded my hometown.  A night driving back to Kona from Kiluaea, a full moon in the sky and the air scented with jacaranda and jasmine.

Leslie

Beltane                                                                                  Full Last Frost Moon

Warm and warmer.  Vegetables getting a needed shot of sun and improved soil temps.  Mark cleared away all the limbs from the cedar butchery this morning.  Now the  northern part of the garden gets a full dose of sun from early morning through mid-to-late afternoon.

Spent most of the afternoon with Leslie, our last meeting.  We discussed the nature of evil, humanism, humanists, approaching the UU fellowship process (the process by which UU students become ordained) and various other matters.  Lasted until 2:30.  That means there is little time to get a nap in before the next to last legcom meeting tonight and the meeting of the Conservation Committee that I will also attend tonight.

Still working on the Ai Weiwei matter, though things have slowed down a bit as the Minnesota legislature has begun to hit its crescendo.

Sigh

Beltane                                                                Waxing Last Frost Moon

Yes, I know it’s a two-hour parking zone.  No, I didn’t remember that after I realized I’d my second tour of the day was an hour later than I’d thought.  Result?  $42 fine.  Ouch.

Uncle.  I’ll park right next time.  I promise.

Kids from Orono today.  Good kids, attentive and ready to interact if a bit a reticent.  Went well.

a this and that day

Beltane                                                            New Last Frost Moon

Back to the this and that of life.  Sleepy this AM, so an early morning nap, then lunch with Leslie, but no Leslie.  She’s moving and forgot.  Then over to Carlson’s for an oil change in the Celica.  Back home, a bit of putzy stuff at home, then another nap.  See a theme here?

Sierra Club and MIA stuff.  Getting ready to leave again for the Red Stag and the Monday Woolly session.

A bit out of it today, a bit down.  Lingering effect of the tai chi episode, I imagine.  Like the flu, it will pass.

Bush Is a Cylon

Spring                                                                      Waning Bloodroot Moon

Bush is a Cylon. (bumper sticker) Either you get it or you don’t.  An artifact from the last administration and a vanished TV drama.

Toured some kids today from Ramsey, students at the PACT charter school.  These kids were polite, well-spoken, interested and perceptive.  Easy to tour.  A joy.

Time for a nap.
