Samhain                                                             Winter Moon

Today is a lumberjack day.  Or, probably a lumberjack couple of hours.IMAG0746

Winter is an excellent time to work in the woods.  No bugs.  You don’t overheat.  Wood splits easily.  No leaves get in the way so drop lines are clear.  Of course, it is -3 here yet this morning. That’s a bit on the chilly side, but I’m grabbing my madbomber hat (no, seriously, that’s the brand name) and my chainsaw.  Gonna be good.

I do plan, however, to stay away from all beaver dams.

This snowstorm has the slows.  The Updraft blog says it’s on its way, but will show around midnight now, rather than 6 pm.  There are some impressive numbers reported already for the northern part of the state:  “Up north, some epic snowfall totals approaching 2 feet are already down near Two Harbors, and totals will likely exceed 30 inches to 3 feet along the North Shore ridges by Thursday.”

(High waves at the Duluth Lake Superior harbor)

Kate spent the night in Sundance, Wyoming, near Devil’s Tower.  She remarked on the beauty of Wyoming and I agree.  It’s a beautiful place with very few people, fewer than 575,000, which puts it at 50 of 50 in terms of population.  That’s 5.9 folks per square mile, lower density than 48 others.  Only enormous Alaska has a lower density at 1.3 per square mile.  Beauty does not feed people.  The barren high plains and intermontane areas plus the Rocky Mountains on the western edge make Wyoming inhospitable. Sounds like a perfect place to live.  Except for those Cheney’s and the homophobia.  Laramie’s in Wyoming.

Looks like December 1st, the first day of meteorological winter, is not going to be far off. Temperatures will descend quickly after mid-week into below zero ranges.  That big snow storm?  Now maybe rain.  I hope not.  The ground is frozen and it won’t do us any good, just make things messy.

Kate gets back on the road today, headed toward Minnesota, just ahead of approaching true winter weather.  The dogs and I will be glad to see her.

An incredible experience.  Lucid for the whole procedure I watched with fascination.  The body is a miracle of evolution, finely crafted for its task.  I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable and healthy colon.

Samhain                                                     New (Thanksgiving) Moon

Forgot to say Happy New Year.  Samhain is the beginning of the Celtic new year. Celebrating the beginning of the year at the end of the growing season makes sense to me. The old productive year has finished and a time of rest for the land, and to some extent for those who work the land, begins.
