A Waning Taste For Politics

Bob Feemster owned the Alexandria Times-Tribune which my father served as editor for many years.  In 1951 Bob bought us a black and white TV because the believed newspaperman should be aware of this new media.  My earliest memory of television and politics comes from watching that little TV in the 1952 race between Stevenson and Eisenhower.  A Democratic household, we were pulling for the Unitarian Stevenson against the former General of the Armies, Eisenhower.

This  was long before news organization using exit polling and computer modeling to declare victors.  The actual number of votes was what mattered and they showed up at different points in time.  The far west results didn’t begin to come in until midnight or so.  Dad let me stay up and watch the election returns with him.  Of course, it was partly staying up late at night that intrigued me, but I had also caught my father’s passion for the process.  What would happen?

You know the result.  Far from turning me away from politics, that long ago late night served as a foundation for a life of modest political activism.  You know, student politics in high school, student politics in college, radicalization during the Vietnam war era and engagement since then in various levels and kind of activism from Indiana Presidential politics and Minneapolis City politics to Minnesota state politics, neighborhood politics in Minneapolis as well as community based economic development and a raft of other state and local efforts.

In some ways politics has been the defining theme of my life.  I’ve been at it, more or less, since that night in 1952.  Rarely I have gone for more than a year without some concrete form of political engagement.  When I encounter problems in our broader community, my first thought is of a political response, how to organize it, where to start.

But.  I’m losing my taste for it.  Why?

These days I work on political issues related to environmental concerns.  I have a responsible position in a large Minnesota organization with a track record for achieving change at both the state and national levels.  My role is directly political in that I serve as a sort of manager for the organizations legislative work.  My passion for a peaceful, verdant, and just world (as some foundation says) is not less than it has been.  So, what’s the problem?

It may be broadly an analytical problem.  That is, my political work has a good deal of calculation attached to it. Analysis of political realities and the nature of changes we want often conflict.  The political path is the one on which something can be made to happen.  This puts the work largely in my head, when my motivation comes largely from my heart.  Over the years, now the many years, of political work, I have learned dispassionate detachment perhaps too well.

The work no longer serves as a vehicle for my passion.  Where has that passion gone?  Into art and writing.  When I have downtime, art comes to mind.  The world of art has drawn me, given me space for my passion and an arena in which to share that passion.  Writing has done the same.  I even have a passion for the Latin work I’m about to start up again.  But, no longer for politics.

This is a difficult place for me to be.  It feels as if I’m denying a part of myself or about to become irresponsible.  However, here’s what I’ve concluded.

When I pressed my way into the Sierra Club’s work a few years ago, I did it through the political committee, which seemed the natural fit for me.  Long experience in non-profit organizations and in political contexts have given me skills that helped me move up in the organization’s leadership.  Yet it feels increasingly like a burden.  I wonder now whether this work with the Sierra Club isn’t a regression like my return to the UU ministry.

Regressions, my analyst told me, occur because there is something you need to retrieve or repair.  In this case it might have been my agency.  Agency is the capacity to have an impact and I wondered, when I reengaged with the Sierra Club, if I still had it.  Yes.  The answer is yes.  A more important question now, however, is this:  Do I need to assert my agency at this point in my life?  No.  I don’t.

This morning I took a group of 15 Jesuits-to-be through the Matteo Ricci map exhibit.  They were a bright and curious group, joining the same order that deployed Ricci to China 330+ years ago.   The Jesuits were only a generation old at that point.  They were the most attentive group I took through, because, I imagine, they felt some personal stake, no matter how tenuous.  The Chinese Heritage Foundation displayed equal interest, but soon began exploring the map for themselves, reading the calligraphy.  This was an interesting exhibit and improved my knowledge of the Ming dynasty and the Jesuit order.

When I rolled those plastic trash bins out to the roadside tonight, the full Artemis moon had risen.  Full moons hang over the far eastern end of our street and it was beautiful, golden.  The air was cool, the sky a deep blue and this gold charm floated just above the trees.

Three boxes full of honey extracting equipment came just before I left for the city this morning.  Kate and I plan to open tomorrow morning, see what’s in them.  Two more boxes are on their way from another Dadant plant.  This means we’ll get the equipment set up before our date for extraction–August 30th.  Good thing.  All this equipment and it’s only used once a year for a brief time, but in that brief time it captures the results of a year’s worth of collaborative labor between beekeeper and bees.  Worth it.

Downtown Minneapolis, along the Nicollet Mall, has a lot of art, as Glen Keitel showed a group of 15 or so this afternoon.  We started with shadow portraits made of loonbronze and cast into the sidewalk.  They were commemorations of various political struggles including the 1934 truckers strike, Nellie Stone Johnson’s political career and a moving tribute to a Dakota woman.  Across the street from them at Westminster Presbyterian a Paul Granlund cast three humans up and heavenward from geometric forms all cast in bronze.  We walked a long ways, over two hours, and the leg on which I ruptured my achilles took to aching.

A surprising number (to me) of restaurants downtown now have sidewalk dining and there were plenty of people out and about.  A fun afternoon.

There was, too, as there always is in a major downtown, desperate people pleading for attention, for money.  One woman stood with a sign that said she was 7 months pregnant; another man asked me to roll down my window on the way home.  A few sat heads down, clothes tattered, a look of dejection covering them in gloom.

There are now many theories about the mall, whether it was a good idea or whether it has stagnated downtown, taking the liveliness out of it.  Should we fix it by allowing cars?  Should we close it altogether?  What worried me was the number of businesses with store fronts, but no display windows and several buildings with papered over glass and graffiti.

It is city life, flux, humanity at its richest and most callous, humanity at its poorest and most demeaned, the impermanent made to seem solid and stable amidst the signs of constant change and the flow, always the flow, of paper and food and metal and goods, in and out, as the people flow too, making paths that do not last on streets that will not either.

Slept well past 6:30 this morning, then a very long nap.  The body still marshalling its resources.  I’m ready to be done with this, but it does not seem ready to be done with me.

In between I went into the MIA to have lunch with Mark Odegard.  Mark’s a Woolly, a friend, an artist and a damned fine jazz piano player.  He has very interesting friends.  One friend of his is on a two-month journey in Peru working on developing a complete catalog of all, underline all, the plants in the Amazon.  Sounds like a crazy task, but he’s found somebody who’s already done a lot of the work.

This was a thank you lunch, in part, for the bang-up design work he’s done for Artemis Honey.  As we have before, we wandered through the museum, looking at various things, talking about them.  The Ricci map.  The Minnesota Artists Gallery works by two young Asian women.  Ceramics and glass and wood bowls by women artists.

In talking about my work I told him something I realized last week.  The museum work grabs my heart; I think about things there, mull them over, look forward to going in, get excited about new collections, new artists, encounter objects that pierce my soul.  Even the Sierra Club, which is important and I do it because it’s important, doesn’t grab my heart the way the art does.  I wish it did, but it doesn’t.

Spent most of the day without internet service.  I tried to alter the way my router plugs into the internet and it worked for a while, then the router just went all kablooey.  An hour and a half of reading the manual, trying this, then that and I got the connection back but I lost the alterations I’d made.  I’ll try’em again tomorrow.

Oh.  The Wolfman.  I spoke too soon.  As I watched the end, I found it gained texture and strength.  The cinematography was wonderful and the pathos of the altered conclusion–altered from the Chaney original–made the story more emotionally gripping.

Oh, boy.  Just got myself into another situation.  Promising things I’m not sure I know how to accomplish.  I hope this goes with do one thing you fear every day, month, year–whatever time frame you can stand.  Cannot reveal details right now, but this could be a lot of fun for a lot of people or a complete bust.  Feels like the old days when I used to do this kind of stuff all the time.  Dream up something, contact a few folks, make it happen.

Still fatigued.  Kate says it’s my body still healing itself.  I hope so, because it feels like I’m still sick.

A friend the other day referred to herself as a lapsed Unitarian.  Lapsed Unitarian.  That made me wonder.  What are the spiritual and metaphysical consequences of falling away from the only faith named for two doctrines, Unitarianism and Universalism, in which none of its members believe?

I have come to see UU as a way station of sorts, a caravan serai for the pilgrim lost in the desert or high on a mountain and in need of refreshment, companionship.  Maybe a spiritual decompression chamber where individuals are brought safely back to their spiritual sea level.  It’s clear to me that my decompression is complete, has been complete for several years now.

Now, this is probably idiosyncratic, but I’m pretty sure it’s not unusual.  When we step away from a long time, culturally supported faith tradition like Christianity or Judaism, the lag time for decompression can be lengthy.  Not only do we have to unlearn one faith identity, we have to find or create another.  The UU movement is perfect for that time, for the initial time of confusion and disorientation and for the development, the constructing of a new faith.  Once that work is done however it most often results in a person anchored no longer in institutional faith, but in a place more like the world, the world of the human and the animals and the rock and the lake, a place where the spiritual moment is every moment and where the faith commitment may have an introspective, interpersonal, natural, and/or political expression, but not an institutional one.

So.  Perhaps lapsed Unitarian is the destiny of most of us no longer inside the Christian hermeneutical circle.  It still helps to have a place to rest along the way.

Kids, Chinese Heritage and Sheepshead + Buddhism

Whew.  Into the MIA for tours with kiddies from the Peace Games at the park across from the Museum.  I had two groups, one a group of girls mostly who were sensitive, responsive and imaginative.  A pleasure.  The second group was all tween boys who wandered, posed, paused and were harder to engage, though the sword did get their attention.

When finished, I knew I had to return at 5:45 and I had the option of staying, but I chose to drive back home and take a nap.  After an illness, I like to get as much rest as possible.

So, turn around at 5:00 pm and go back to the museum for a tour of the Matteo Ricci map with the Chinese Heritage Foundation.  They were a lively, bright group who could read the map!  That gave more insight into it.  Lots of good questions, conversation.

I left the museum at 6:45 and headed over to St. Paul to sheepshead.  The card gods smiled on me tonight.  After a slow start, I got some better cards.

Then, back home.  A long day.  On the drive I’ve been listening to more of the Religions of the Axial Age lectures.  The ones right now focus on Buddhism.  I’ve never found Buddhism appealing though certain elements seem helpful.  Since I’m a not a big believer in reincarnation or kharma, the Buddha seems to be solving a problem I don’t have.  After listening to the notion of no-self, I began to have a distinct puzzlement.  I don’t get how the notion of no-self and continuing rebirth co-exist.  I must be misunderstanding something.

Two very different tours today:  Peace Games with small children in globs of 15 or so for 15 minutes and a Matteo Ricci tour for Chinese folks.  The first one is about fun, questions, seeking treasure and oh by the way this is art.   In the first room I have, a collection of modern Japanese ceramics, not very promising for  young kids, I’m going to have them look for something that looks like it came off an airplane and some flowers.  Then, if they seem interested, we’ll put together a group story.  In the next room there is a very cool piece in which an artist who is under pressure from the law is defended by characters from his prints.  I’ll tell the story there.  In the ukiyo-e gallery, we’ll be looking at netsuke.  The kids will decide which one is most like someone in their life.  In the next to last gallery I’ll tell the story of the Minamoto battles on the big screen, we’ll look at the samurai armor and swords.  If there’s time, we’ll hunt for animals in the last gallery.

The Matteo Ricci is something completely different.  This is an exhibit honoring a Westerner, Ricci, who visited China as a Jesuit, landing in Macao in 1583 and dying in Peking in 1610 while serving as court mathematician to the WanLi emperor.  While in Peking, he created a huge map in six large panels, a map of the world, the first to use Western and Chinese cartography.  Though Ricci had hundreds of these maps printed only 5 survived to the present day.  At least that was what was originally thought.  A London rare maps dealer found this map, the one on display at the MIA, in the collection of a private party in Japan.  It’s discovery caused one map scholar to name it “the impossible black tulip.”  The James Ford Bell Library at the university of Minnesota purchased it for $1,000,000.  It will complement their collection which “documents the history and impact of international trade prior to ca. 1800 C.E.”

It represents an interesting historical nexus, reformation and enlightenment era Europe visiting China in the final years of the Ming Dynasty, at a point when the Chinese had turned away from sailing in the age of sail and had begun to deemphasize foreign contacts just as European traders from the Dutch and Britain began to show up alongside the earlier and better established Portuguese and Spanish.  They were not alone.  It was in the early 1600’s that Japan closed the country to foreign trade and foreign visitors.

The Wanli Emperor, the Emperor of Ten Thousand Calendars, was in the last years of his reign when Ricci finally made it to Peking becoming the first Westerner in the northern capital established by the Yongle Emperor in the 15th century.  The Wanli emperor had started his reign well, executing military matters and administrative concerns with some skill.  He became disenchanted, however, with the infighting and moral attacks back and forth among Neo-Confucian scholar officials.  In response he essentially gave up the running of the country, leaving China with a faction fractured central government compounded by his imperial inaction.  The effect was to remove China from the world scene just as European exploration, commercial avarice and technological advancements grafted itself onto Europe’s own imperial ambitions.  The result of these two forces moving in opposite directions would change the course of world history, a change only now beginning to right itself from a Chinese perspective.

It was into this volatile mixture that Ricci brought European science, mathematics, art and, of course, religion.  Ricci became a literati, a member of the scholar-official class, mastering Chinese and the mores of the governing class.  His acceptance in those circles propelled him close to the Imperial court and found him buried in Peking after his death in 1610, an honor accorded to few Westerners.  He did not, however, convince many Chinese to become Roman Catholics.

Sometimes thing go as planned.  Sometimes not.  The session with David Little (curator of photography) this morning did not go as planned.  For whatever reason we had an hour to spare, wandering the wonderful Bergman exhibition as Bill Bomash teased out clues to the stories behind the photographs.  A young girl, wanting to talk about her experience, joined the group and added her observations.  Who’s to say that was wasted time?

David Little comes out of a museum educators background and has a real feel for what is useful to docents.  He showed some new acquisitions including a surprise by Ansel Adam, a surrealist shot of a scissors and thread.  We also wandered into the 55 degree refrigerator, larger than a large meat locker, where the MIA stores it’s 11,500 photographs.  Cool, man.

He also talked about how he makes curatorial decisions, relationships with dealers and photographers, in particular as it relates to borrowing objects.  In the contemporary art and photography realm shows need relevance and he finds working with dealers and photographers much more expeditious than working with museums where the decision turn around for a loan can take as much as a year.

He and Liz Armstrong, the new contemporary arts curator, have a commitment to collecting and exhibiting work being made now and in the recent past.  The two of them, as well as Kaywin Feldman, have brought a fresh energy and verve to the whole museum and I, for one, am glad.  Not that the old museum was bad, it wasn’t, but the new folks have juiced things up, creating new ways to view and understand art.

We finished up with David Little over lunch.  He promised to get us some bibliography and to develop more in depth photography ed as new exhibitions are hung.  A good event with the timing slightly off.  The quality of the contact with David was high.  Thanks, Lisa.

Kate and I had a guy, Glenn, come up tonight and give us a presentation and bid on creating a water feature by the patio.  He seems to know his stuff and have a sensible plan to give us what we want.

Been fighting this same damned virus I had a month or so ago.  Kate says having clusters of illnesses is not unusual in that the body can retain a reservoir of the virus or bacteria.  Your body builds up antibodies and knocks it out at some point.  At least this time I have not had the pink eye or the ear infection.

Why Go To A Museum? It’s Where Art Is.

Museums.  They’ve played an important role in my life since I was young.  In reading a report titled Museum’s 2034 I learned that most people like me can identify a key moment between age 5 and age 9 that cemented a strong relationship with museums.  Nothing comes to mind.  I may have had such an experience, but if I did I don’t recall it now.

My first memorable museum experiences came on the campus of Ball State University where the small art museum there drew me in on a regular basis.  At the time I had three refuges from the hectic life of a late 60’s college student:  the library, the sanctuary of a local Catholic church on weekday afternoons and the art museum.  In each one I could find my center, fend off the anxieties and confusions of having my whole world torn apart and rebuilt piece by piece.

I never found a comparable place anywhere I lived until I moved to the Twin Cities.  At that time the seminary, UTS, offered a quick tour of the Twin Cities for new students.  I chose the art focus and went for the first time to the Walker, the MIA and the Guthrie.  Over the 30 some years since then I’ve continued to go to all three though Guthrie attendance has waned over the last several years, as has those Friday evenings at the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

What is it about museums?  Those of us who visit them, who love them, tend to be promiscuous, visiting other museums when out of town, sometimes spending hours in their galleries, maybe even more time than we spend in our own museums.   We can’t get enough.  Of what?

Auto-didacticism must be a key motivator for all of us.  No one but ourselves makes us trek up the stone steps of the Chicago Art Institute or the Met or the National Gallery.  We enter sometimes with a plan, sometimes with a hope, sometimes as a seeker, waiting for a moment, an instance when an object meets us in the moment, rocks us back on our feet or pierces our heart or shifts the internal landscape of our mind.

I still remember the first time I saw Cezanne’s Water Lilies in Chicago.  I stopped and didn’t move for quite a while.  Singer’s Lady in White drew me in the same way in the National Gallery.  Breughel’s work in the Kunsthistorische.  Botticelli in the Uffizi.  The Sistine Chapel.  The Winged Victory of Samothrace.  Redon’s ethereal work in the Musee D’orsay. Goya’s Dr. Arrieta in our own museum.  What happens?  A living relationship begins with a work of art, a relationship that will not end until the work has been seen for the last time and not even, it ends not until the work fades from memory.  It is so much like falling in love.  Allowing another to enter into the intimate spaces, to lay itself down along the most inner corridors of the heart.  A line sometimes.  Cezanne moves me with his lines, so does Picasso.

And color.  Bonnard.  Monet.  Cezanne. Ukiyo-e prints.  Chinese silks and Japanese garments.

At least for me art is first a sensual experience, again the parallel with love.  It is a physical attraction, a force of its own, unexplainable and indefinable.  It is, later, a dialogue, but one always colored by that first, sense loaded encounter.  Museums offer the chance for these experiences and, therefore, I treasure them.

Back from a long day at the MIA. Got there for the ten o’clock tour only to discover they didn’t need me.  I used the time to prepare for my 1:30 tour with the Campfire Girls.  I wandered through the museum in a leisurely way, seeing the cho ken garments, the ukiyo-e prints, the MAEP galleries with the wonderful bojagi bags and the Amada pieces on the brevity of life.  I also looked in on the Basins, Bowls and Baskets collection of work by women artists in those genres.

It was fun and, as often happens when I wander by myself, I found sparks flying for work I’m doing here at home.

Allison and I ate lunch at Christo’s, a pleasant diversion, the came back for the tour.   I was ready for girls, but my group included four young men.  Not to worry.  We had a fun time going through various parts of the museum looking at some things I had in mind and stopping at some things that attracted the group.  The hour went quickly.

Back home, let the dogs out and fed them, caught up on my e-mails and now I’m ready for a nap.
